Burping and farting.
Sorry to be so crude but sometimes after using my CPAP mask I wake up and start burping and farting for hours, as if the machine has filled my stomach with air. OK I'm pretty sure that's what happens but why is that happening? Something's wrong surely?

I think it's just one of those things that the body takes time to adjust to. I'm not a doctor but I'm sure it will get better when the brain trains the body not to let the air go in the stomach. I use to have a lot of trouble with the same thing when I started xpap therapy 2 years ago. Now it only happens on occasion and I'm usually aware of it happening and wake up to change positions. With me it helps to keep my chin down toward my chest which seems to make it harder for the air to go into the stomach. Good luck and I'm sure someone else will have answers for you.

You are correct, you are swallowing air. In my experience with patients this happens when PAP therapy users sleep with their chins tucked close to their chest. This is usually when heads are propped up on several pillows.
This is also frequent with new PAP therapy users. I don't know if it's an adjustment period or what, but it seems to go away after a month or so.

Hmm, that's funny Jason because the way I can STOP mine from happening is to "tuck my chin to my chest". Interesting.

Oh my gosh!!!! Thank you for correcting me bonesigh. You are absolutely correct. I re-read my post and actually called myself an idiot!!! I promise to not answer questions during what should be my post lunch siesta.
It exascerbates my typing/thinking dyslexia....

That's funny Jason. Sometimes i answer post in the am after work. later when i re-read them I get a good laugh. My spelling and grammar are bad enough. Throw 3 days of sleep deprivation on it and i am making up my own languages.

We have had a few patients have that problem, it's one of the lesser symtoms of non-tolerance. Bi-Level (BPAP)(BIPAP) can controll this it helps one exhale so the air does not build up, thus swallowing air. Check into it. This has worked for some of our patients. ......Duane.

Why would someone use a Bi-Pap instead of a C-Pap? I'm having the "air swallowing thing" too and have for several months.

Eructation and excessive morning flatus can be symptoms of other issues regardless of using nPAP. If it continues more than a few weeks contact your Healthcare provider.

I've had the same problem since I switched from bipap to ASV and found it very disruptive. Even though I didn't feel like I was having the central events I was still sleep deprived. My doctor has made some adjustments on the pressure in fact I'm waiting for him to call me back for another one and hoping to get it perfect this time! Before it was too much air volume now it doesn't feel like enough- I want the happy medium!

Ask away. :) No, I didn't have this issue before. In fact, on 2 nights I went without my C-Pap and didn't have any issues (just to be sure).
