What I'd like to know is...how many people on this forum have lost weight after therapy?

I gained weight. And I follow a diet and exercise regularly.
I've been on CPAP for 15 years almost. I think I'm basically still at the same weight. I tend to lose weight only if I really concentrate on my diet, watching what I eat. I've bounced up and down over the years, due to diet and exercise. I don't believe that I've had any weight loss benefit purely from my CPAP usage - and I'm 100% compliant!

However, I also think I had sleep apnea for 25 years before I was diagnosed. Research now shows that the lack of sleep (which certainly happens to us apneacs, causes the body to misuse two hormones related to appetite, causing us to feel hungrier and have trouble shutting off eating because we don't get the "full" signals that we should. Then once you carry that weight around, the visceral fat you develop doesn't go away easily.

However, I do sleep better and feel better using my CPAP. Whether I lose weight or not, the CPAP mask stays on!

now that i have got my major health issue taken care of (my lyme disease is in remission after being 95% bedridden for twenty years) i can concentrate on my other health issues. i have not lost weight on c-pap, but when i started taking armour thyroid (increased up to eight pills) and one other thyroid medication, i did loose some weight.( the lyme disease ruined my thyroid) my c-pap keeps falling off, so i need to work on this issue. also, i am waiting to see if my application for a discount to the centre (a fitness place) is going to happen. i was walking outside a mile a day until it got too hot. i had lost twenty pounds with the thyroid medication and walking. i am so ready to start exercising again.( on my sleep test i woke up 37 times an hour so i know it is very serious for me to figure out how to keep my mask on all night.)
I think the weight loss theory by going on CPAP is BS.
i gained, but they told me that, that was to be expected, b/c when you're not using it & you're struggling to breathe, you're sort of getting a workout...I know I've woke up w/ my heart racing many times before I started using my cpap & some of the times I've left it off since, which, from what i understand, is one of the reasons that you're tired all day...
I lost about 15 kg over the time, but it probably was caused by other facors. I am not physically active at all
having severe arthritis.
Just read the other replies and I must say that I'm very disappointed, had really hoped that this downward spiral of apnea, illness and weight gain would become and upward one of recovery on all levels but it looks CPAP is no cure for being a chub.

From the sound of it those of us with weight to lose still have to do it the old fashioned way! It seems that most people get an increase in energy and from there it's all a matter of what we choose to do with that energy.

A tech told me that during the typical apnea sufferers night we burn a tremendous amount of calories in the struggle to breath. I suppose once the struggle is over the calories just go to our "curves".

Also seem to be gaining weight after almost 4 months, but as with others, it's more to do with my own discipline on eating and exercise. I do feel more energetic and have adapted pretty well to the CPAP, so now that the sleep issue is managed, it's time to get on track with my weight.

I lost about 30 lbs in the last year and a half, thru exercise. I'm 5'8" and now 158 lbs. I am a CPAP user for the last 4 years, with pressure set at 6. The CPAP has been wonderful, helping me sleep better, gained my energy back, the humidifier helps when I have a cold ...

This is an aside ... starting last December, I was not sleeping well (waking up more tired than usual and mind is foggy) so I had myself tested again at a sleep clinic this year. The result indicated that I need to be at a higher pressure of 7. After a month, I'm still not sleeping well at this higher pressure. I switched from a fisher and paykel to a Resmed S8 Autoset II because the F&P is making a lot of noises. I wonder how many people has lost weight and had their CPAP pressure increased ...

I did lose weight, but it was because I had more energy during the day to work out, thanks to the bipap!
It was a goal I had set for myself. I have been using biPap for over a year now, and I can't remeber what it was like to sleep without it.

This gettin healthy is HARD work, as you get older.
I never heard of anyone loosing weight by using the C-Pap machine. You have to excercise and eat less to do that.
