Well, even on my very first sleep study back in 1994, I got a good education from the tech who was hooking me up and I've observed that happening with techs at other labs. But given the way we're hooked up, that might not count as "face to face"! L…

Keep in mind that this is a medical meeting that is a heavy duty paid registration. I've attended for years because I've helped work at the American Sleep Apnea Association exhibit booth, but to fully attend can cost up to $400 (meetings and exhibit…

Susan, I'm not sure what was going on that they didn't titrate you more fully in the lab, but I suspect your discomfort and "lack of air" at 4-5 hours of sleep signals that your pressure is not high enough to control your apneas while you're hittin…

I've been on CPAP for 15 years almost. I think I'm basically still at the same weight. I tend to lose weight only if I really concentrate on my diet, watching what I eat. I've bounced up and down over the years, due to diet and exercise. I don't bel…

I like # 6, particularly the mention of A.W.A.K.E. groups. I've led two A.W.A.K.E. groups for years and am the Past Chairman of the American Sleep Apnea Association which fosters the A.W.A.K.E. Network. This is a good place for those who are not int…

Ron, Part of the issue is the generic "doctors" term. The avergage primary care physician has little or no training on sleep medicine during medical school, probably no more than 2-3 hours according to research. I've educated my primary physician t…

I started on CPAP in the fall of 94. I had a minor pressure "tweak" from my sleep doc in 1997 when I lost some weight and we just did it by experiment, first dropping from 13 to 10 and then going back to 12 when I fell asleep the first afternoon aft…

Over the years, the US standards have changed. I'm severe at 82 and always have been, but when I was first diagnosed back in the 1990's, the standard was 50 for severe. As we've learned more about sleep apnea the parameters have changed a bit. With…

Hearing/Reading the word apnea in the Congress is a rarity, so this is at least a minimal step in speaking the words. Now all of us should write our congress persons to support the resolution and urge them to consider additional funding to support a…

Trina, Some patients on anti-depressants who start CPAP therapy can either lessen the amount of medication or get off it entirely. If there has been no change made to your meds and your CPAP therapy over the past 4 years, it may be time to do some…

Ha! So you don't think there's any chemistry gonna help me, eh? *giggle* Thanks, Dave I do appreciate it. I see Dr Fernando Martinez in pulmonary every now and again and HE is WONDERFUL. But - I don't know anyone in sleep there. *sigh*

Thanks, Dave. I'm in the Flint, Saginaw, Lansing triangle but I am also taking part in a couple of COPD research trials at U of M in Ann Arbor (near Detroit).

Hey, Dave,

Mike suggested I ask you if you knew of any "outstanding" sleep doctors in Michigan. I have COPD. But as much as the sleep doctor knowing his sleep stuff I want a sleep doctor I can TALK to, one who is willing to take the time to answer questions. Do you know of any such scions of virtue in Michigan??? You know, the old "good bedside manner" bit as well as good sleep expertise.

Yup, if you've got insurance, your insurance dictates which local DME providers you can use. Just because you bought your CPAP elsewhere does NOT mean that your insurance contracted providers can't or won't provide your masks and other accessories.…

Linda, thanks your your help. When I call Apria, I wil ask them why they did not offer me a payment plan. Good luck!

Hi Candace, Apria is giving me a payment plan for 10 months, after that I will buy it if I still need it. In the mean time, all of the folks here are so helpful they told me the best cpap to get and low and behold, Apria did not give me a newer mode…

I believe that individuals should be free to make decisions for themselves. This goes for the patients and the providers. The patient is free to decide what to do and who to pay for what services. The provider is free to decide what services he offe…
