Sleep Apnea Awareness Bill in House
Congressman Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla.) recently introduced House Resolution 384, "Sleep Apnea Awareness," which states that the House will raise public awareness of sleep apnea and encourage all Americans to educate themselves and others about the consequences of sleep apnea and its potential treatments. Below is full text of the resolution:
HRES 384 Recognizing the importance of increased awareness of sleep apnea, and for other purposes.
Whereas sleep apnea is a common condition that affects more than 12,000,000 Americans, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health;
Whereas there are several types of sleep apnea that cause people with this condition to repeatedly stop breathing throughout the night, often many times;
Whereas sleep apnea is a chronic condition that disrupts sleep three or more nights each week, leading to excessive daytime sleepiness;
Whereas sleep apnea becomes more common with age, and 1 in 10 people over the age of 65 suffers from it;
Whereas sleep apnea is more common in men than women, and more than half of the people with sleep apnea are overweight;
Whereas sleep apnea can strike anyone, at any age, at any time, including children;
Whereas untreated sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity, and diabetes;
Whereas untreated sleep apnea can also increase the chance of having work-related or driving accidents and adversely impact the quality of life of those suffering from this condition in other ways;
Whereas lifestyle changes, mouthpieces, surgery, and/or breathing devices can successfully treat sleep apnea in many people; and
Whereas the lack of public awareness of this serious condition leads to many undiagnosed and untreated cases: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the House of Representatives--
(1) supports raising public awareness of sleep apnea; and
(2) encourages all Americans to educate themselves and others about the consequences of sleep apnea and its potential treatments.

This is a "feel good" resolution, which amounts to a hill of beans. It provides $0 for study, $0 public awareness, $0 for public education. It is however loaded with Washington BS.
This resolution is no different than the hundreds of feel good BS legislative tags which burden the entire process, but allows the BS peddlers in Washington say - "Look what I did."

Hearing/Reading the word apnea in the Congress is a rarity, so this is at least a minimal step in speaking the words. Now all of us should write our congress persons to support the resolution and urge them to consider additional funding to support a campaign through the Center for Sleep Disorders Research and/or the Centers for Disease Control.
I do wonder what triggered this resolution, too.

This is great publicity! Write your state reps, tell everyone that will listen. Pass or not if this publicity saves one more life it becomes a good thing.

Ever watched all those old judges sleeping in the Supreme Court.....hmmm could they be lacking in the proper amount of sleep???? Let's start by getting more people informed by having free clinics and recognizing a lot of sports stars and celebraties that have died in their sleep. I think the big nut to crack is the health care system that is going down the crapper fast. Now with more Americans losing their jobs there is even more people that can';t even see a doctor. How sad for us that we can't see that STANDARDIZED medicine should be offered to people.

Well maybe this is step one to more awareness, not the only step for sure. Have you noticed how many ads for sleep aides and articles on improving your sleep "hygiene" never even mention sleep apnea...or it is a small footnote. How many people are padding the pockets of sleep med peddlers and the affects are only worsening a condition for which the only medication is AIR. I have read multiple articles about sleep over the years that never once mentioned sleep apnea...I didn't even know about it until an acquaintance was diagnosed. There is a lot of incomplete information about sleep disorders being published. It doesn't cost anything to publish the truth......Hmmm or maybe it does....called profits.

The truth and what's right our always the hardest things to get out because there is usually no profit in either one. We have to keep fighting the good fight. Sites like this one and a few others will only make it better as they grow in strength. Personally I have been able to help more people with apnea and other sleep problems through this site then I would have ever thought possible Word is getting out. I beg you to write your state reps. I beg sleepguide to write state reps as 1500 voices and support this bill. We can talk about it in forum all we want, but if we don't make our opinions known then they die along with quite a few undiagnosed apneac victims. Dr.s and techs are paying attention to what YOU patients have to say. Everyone else will too if you say it LOUD enough.

No-one in congress will vote against this bill. It'll pass by a unanimous (all say yea) voice vote.
Trouble is that this resolution says and does nothing beyond giving verbal support to the encouraging of studying and becoming aware about sleep apnea.

Awareness is the first step BP, 18 months ago I had no idea that apnea existed now I make a living evaluating and treating it. All it took was someone to set me down and explain it to me. Once I realized how many of my own relatives had died from it I was in. We can't actually push people to get a study. through education and awareness we can reach a much broader group. This is the way I look at the big picture. The more people we educate the more inquiries we are going to have. The more inquiries we are going to have the more studies we are going to do. the more studies that get done the more people get treated. The more treatments = greasing for the wheels. The more greasing does in fact turn into more charity diagnosis and treatments for those that can't afford insurance. On top of all that the research continues. The wheels on the bus go......................................................................
