I am wondering why there is no one responding to my question about the use of Provent?  Provent has been around for a few years, and I have to find something other than the CPAP because it has caused my migraines to get worse.

Betty, I don't think many people have tried Provent.  One member of the forum said a friend had tried them and didn't like them  I read of two people on another forum who liked them.  All in all I haven't read of more than three people who used them which is probably the reason for the lack of response.  I find most of the people who post about them without trying them have a very negative response which I don't think is deserved.  I think you'll just have to try them and let us know what you think.

What is Provent?

Thanks, Mary.  I am making an appt with my sleep doctor to find out more about ProVent.  I will keep you posted on what I find out.

Let us know, Betty V. We're all ears.  (Well, maybe I should say we're "all eyes"  ;-) )

I would love to find out that Provent is effective for most people. I will immediately assume that I am one of the "most", try it -- and hopefully be free of traveling with my lug of a CPAP machine, no matter how beloved it has become to me.

And it has become beloved.  (You struggling newbies: please take note.)

It's a device- a little valve that sticks to each nostril with adhesive and raises the pressure on expiration.  That rise of pressure at the end of exhalation is thought to carry over to inspiration and keep the airway open.  It is a prescription device.

Anyone going to buy Provent stock when it goes public ? (actually ventus stock - th parent company)?

Neat.  My doctor mentioned something about using alternative treatments if I am unable to find a mask.  I would be willing to try this.  I hope to hear feedback.

Ok.... Had never heard of Provent until it was posted here. I ordered a starter set today. From what the lady said.....I doubt I will like, but I am going to try them. It sounds like the breathing out will cause issues or me and for e me to breathe through my mouth. This causes more snoring I think.

Anyways....I will re-post after I have tried. By the way.....I got another sinus issue AGAIN from using my machine! Ugh.....I was doing ok and keeping it on all night. 2 days ago...got up with sore throat and sinus drainage again. Now I have to deal with getting that cleared up AGAIN. I hope it is cleared up before I get the Provent. I have been working on it. (((((Sigh)))) It seems like I will never sleep right again.

I treat patients with sleep apnea (physician in FLORIDA).  I routinely give patients the option to try and use Provent.  The technology is very good.  I tell people that the benefits are no MACHINE and disposable (so nothing to clean).  Drawbacks off the bat 1) feels like a bad stuffy nose.  If you open your mouth to breah in, it doesn't work so you need a chin strap 2) Insurance doesn't cover it.  It is a little more than $2.50 a night (which is $$$ long term compared to CPAP.  I have had one person who had allergy to the adhesive so she has bright red peeling skin under her nose.  I have a lot of patients that don't PREFER it but love bringing with them on trips in place of CPAP or use it when the power goes out (or camping).  Hope this helps.  I don't have apnea but have tried myself, and I'm not sure if I would be able to tolerate. The studies were all done on the high resistance (HR) and I have only tried the standard resistance (SR) -- so I can't even imagine.

I had posted a while back when someone asked the same question.  I used the whole 10 night sample pack trying to be able to feel comfortable.  The longest I could last was about 5 minutes without mouth breathing, because the breathing out pressure felt like I was being suffocated. It was pretty miserable.  The literature says to relax and just breathe. Didn't work for me. After so many years with a CPAP, I really wanted a change, and even tried to re-glue/reuse them to try and get used to them.  Would try again if someone posts a 'secret' to help the process.  The customer help line never responded.  That was not encouraging.  This all happened last year, before a trip; wanted to leave the machine at home. Maybe things have improved.

That is exactly what I meant when I said I doubted I woud like them. Who wants to feel suffocated? It is bad enough trying to sleep with a mask on or things under your nose. It restricts your breathing which makes sleeping even harder!

I feel like I have already wasted my money in trying, but I will at least try it once. I am sure my skin on my nose will not like it either. Even the little nasal pillows annoy my skin and will give me a pimple under it.

My husband snores and he just had his uvala removed. It did help his snoring. I am not sure why. Y doc did not mention that as an option for me. He said my throat was small. I never used to snore until I got older. Strange how things can change.
