hahaha

Hey Mike, For most of our history our species slept on animal skins in drafty caves with rocky floors; then on straw in crude stone huts; finally we learned to make fabrics and bags containing lumpy straw or other materials; hammock-like bedding; etc.

They needed a break in the middle of the night under those conditions!

Now with Sleep Number mattresses, waterbeds, heated and air conditioned bedrooms, locks on the houses, energy efficient windows and housing insulation that muffle the sounds of prowling tigers and lions, we can sleep the whole night through!

Maybe I don't take the BBC debunkers seriously because I can usually sleep seven, and sometimes eight, hours in a stretch.

hahaha

Sleep is all about routine. Keep it, follow it, and sleep well.

I thought this was interesting - takes the stress out of waking up at night and not being able to get to sleep again when you realise that perhaps this is just a kick back to another time when we were more intune with ourselves!

I think that sleep needs are very individual. Personally, I need 8 hours of sleep each night. I have a sleep pattern which is considered "normal."

My wife, however, only have the need of maximum 5 hours of sleep. She sleeps very heavily for 3 hours, then she sleeps very lightly for 2 hours. She follows therefore not the normal sleep rhythms.

She is very energetic and is a bundle of energy when she is awake. She never take a nap.

I'd like to see a PSG with her sleep pattern.

Henning

Henning your wife sounds a lot like me! I thought I was weird lol. If I get 4-5 hours sleep I feel more energetic/awake during the day then when I get 8-9 hours of sleep.

Oh I am so jealous of you, Anna! You're a lucky lady.

If this is true of your wife she represents less than 1%of the entire population. Very interesting indeed.

Rock, How healthy do you think that is? I think the body and mind need more time in sleep for rebuilding and reorganizing and imagine there are long term health problems without 7 or 8 hours of sleep.

Many in my wife's family (on her mom´s side) has a similar little need for sleep. Most of her family get very old and are healthy throughout the life and with a lot of energy.

I'm a bit of a slug.  I easily sleep 10 hours though can function fine on less when I have to get up early for some reason.  Until I recently stopped one of my most sedating meds I could sleep 12 or 13 hours and still not be ready to get out of bed.  My puppy bore with me and gently woke me with his whining when I was sleeping long, but I suspect he's much happier that Mom's up earlier now.  I have a lot of small time health problems (not heart or BP), but hypothyroidism which I never had any symptoms of, bipolar (who know how those meds affect my sleep, but they are life saving), and Essential Tremor.  I don't ever  remember sleeping abnormally long before the OSA and depression meds.  Red Bull and Provigil used to be my best friends.
