CPAP use in the great outdoors
Hello All,
I have been working with CPAP patients for 9 yrs now, and can usually find a solution to a given problem....and when all else fails, I turn to the forum here for answers.
I have a patient that is a dilligent CPAP user, he is just shy of 50 yrs old and uses the PAP 100% of the time, for over 5 yrs now.
This year he is going on an extended hunting trip that is 2 days in/out by horseback. I know for campers, you can get a special sheilded dc power cord for use with either a 12v car battery, or you can plug it into a cig lighter in a car. this option did not appeal to him (wouldnt even ask the horse if he would mind toting a car battery, jees). I realize there is a CPAP that is battery operated (AEIOmed makes the Everest), but even this one needs recharged every day. short of going without his CPAP, does anyone have any other options? I would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Sorry, I can't help with the battery, but I think this would be an excellent use of the Provent device. I would want to try it before the trip to see if I tolerated it and felt ok the next day.

have read alot about the provent device, have never know a patient that has tried this before. the patient in question will be traveling to around 9000 feet to go hunting. he tells me he has had a dentist make him an oral appliance. he may have no other choice than to use the dental appliance. thanks for the input

There are portable battery packs available. If you go with direct connect DC connections and no humidifier they should last a few days.

I haven't used any of this stuff myself, I just use a car battery.
The bottom line is portability is possible but is expensive.

These are the CPAP Batteries people in the UK use, and am sure they last for a couple of nights and which can be bought in the US.

Breath right strips and sinus rinse! lol. That is about all a person can do if they don't want to deal with the hassle of dragging along a big battery.
