I'm very new to this site so forgive me if this has already been discussed but it is too important to not share.  I have discovered, if I get on my computer for any amount of time at all 3 -4 hours before bed, it will dramatically screw up my ability to sleep!  When I researched this, I discovered all kinds of websites validating this.  If I get on the computer at night, I'm lucky if I stay asleep 3-4 hours.  If I don't get on the computer at night, I'm out for at least seven hours with zero nighttime trips to the bathroom..  

It seems the blue wave light emitted from the computer monitor will really interfere with your brain's natural sleep mechanisms.  

I WAS looking to buy a Kindle but I'm postponing this purchase until I find proof that this device will not impair my sleep like a computer monitor does.

I even tried wearing tinted glasses while on the computer in the evening.  Didn't help.  So now I do all my computer stuff in the wee hours of the morning before I go to work.  If you want to look it up yourself just google "computer monitors interfering with sleep".  You'll get dozens of web pages to view.

Hi ZolliStar!  Thanks for that link about the Kindle!  I might just be able to get one after all!  LOL

I started looking into blue light blocking glasses and it seems that amber colored glasses do that just fine. Even many cheap under ten dollar glasses block blue light 100%. Wouldn't it be nice if just wearing a pair of them at night while watching TV or using the computer did the trick? Guess what I'll be trying out tonight. :)

Amber?  Cool! I'd been using Just regular, lightly tinted, sunglasses.  Guess what I'll be buying before nightfall?  LOL I wonder if those Aviator sunglasses you see advertised on tv would work?  They're amber and they claim to lessen glare from other sources...

They probably would but I'm guessing the kind that have amber in the temples would block blue light from coming from the sides. I have those $9.99 ones that I use for driving. I love them b/c things seem so much clearer to me during the day. I usem them even on bright but cloudy days too. 

Someone posted about Litebooks. They have rather pricey amber glasses. (Too expensive but the site is very informative.) They also said that red numbers on clocks and red nightlights are best. They don't mess with melatonin levels. Other lights do that even when the eyes are shut! Fascinating stuff!

Kate, thanks much for bringing this to our attention. I now know why I don't drag the computer to my chair anymore! I do love my Kindle fire and have taken it to bed a few times. I haven't noticed any sleep disruption from it.

BP Medical supplies has a pair of blue light blocking safety glasses listed for 4.00.  I just ordered a pair thru Amazon.  I'll let you know how they work.  

I've been keeping a record and I sleep only about six hours a night with at least one bathroom trip. I've been trying to figure out how to get more sleep; tje six hours aren't enough. 

About aa month after I started using my CPAP, I was stunned to sleep 11 hours with only one bathroom trip -- but I was out of town, visiting a cousin. I hadn't been (as is my wont) on a computer at all.

So tonight is Day One of no nighttime 'puter. Let's see what happens....

I've been trying to figure out why I have slept so well when I was away from home -- and so poorly when I'm home. Computer use may be the culprit.

I'm going to turn my computer off by about 7:00 pm for the next few nights to see if I sleep better. If not, maybe I'll have to test shutting it down even earlier. If I find that I get better sleep, I'm going to have to rearrange my life a bit to eliminate computer use at night. It will be worth it.

This is a great topic, with helpful posts.  I have taken only to reading physocal material or e-ink in the evening to ward off some of the sleep problems mentioned.  I assume the Kindle Fire would be a problem, since it emits light & is not passive like e-ink (which I love!).

I haven't been on this site for a long time but I'm so happy I clicked on the Sleep Guide email that came in today. This information is wonderful! I work on a laptop day and night! Until seconds before I go to bed, and have been doing that for about 10 years now.

And if that wasn't bad enough, I have a TV in my room which I often fall asleep to. Can you imagine the amount of blue light circulating in my brain before bed time? Wow!

Since I started using my CPAP machine, my sleep improved enormously and now I enjoy around 6-7 hours of sleep per night. Nevertheless, I'm going to look into this further and check out the glasses everyone is talking about.
