I'll preface all this by saying SleepGuide.com is probably the only place on the internet where you can have an intelligent discussion about anything that might cast CPAP in a negative light, given the financial interests of the other venues out there for education and support (read: people who want to sell you CPAP).  But I went to my doctor the other day and we got into a debate about whether if my next sleep study shows that my weight loss has reduced my AHI to acceptable levels, whether I should get off CPAP.   I argued against it, since my perception is that everyone has obstructed breathing at some point when they sleep and that positive airway pressure can only help keep the body oxygenated and healthy, even if the level of obstruction does not rise to the clinically approved definition of an apnea or hypopnea event.  The doctor disagreed, saying that reliance on CPAP reduces muscle tone in the tongue and that it can actually make you worse off.  He likened it to wearing a cast on your foot that keeps the foot immobilized -- sure that is needed at times, but when you don't use those muscles, you lose them.

What do you all think?

The country is in an abyss of debt. NOTHING in this world is free. If you're not paying for something, someone else is. It would be lovely to have all these free things if they were affordable but the reality is that they aren't. There really is no Santa Claus.

LMAO! The unending debate of liberalism vs capitalism.

What about Mike's situation?

Heck, at this point who can remember his situation?!

But seriously folks, I thought this has already been talked about. There seems to be no consensus about that just like there is no consensus on the liberal vs capitalism debate. Actually, it's not liberals vs capitalism. There are plenty of liberal capitalists around, like Warren Buffet, Bloomberg, etc. It's really about the liberal-conservative debate. I doubt there will ever be agreement on that. I swear it's in the genes which way one will lean!

The debate will go on and on if we let it.

That's what I implied. It's in the genes and all the discussions in the world won't change that. Feel free to carry it on though - or not.

I've said my piece, but I believe medicine does not live in a vacuum from politics.   Costs are a part of any method of treatment as how they are reimbursed and who makes the decisions for allowable reimbursement.   Enjoyed the lively debate.

get off politics and get onto sleep apnea subjects, we can all complain about this and that but what about sleep apnea

Oh really, Been singing for years. I still have sleep apnea.

Well, this article seems to agree with the doc - well, sort of. The news is excellent, BTW!

FWIW, I'm seeing a speech therapist on Monday for the exact mouth, tongue, and throat issues. Can't wait to see what happens then!

I haven't seen too many positive results with this type of thing either Lynn. I just think it's sometimes better to let some learn for themselves. Apnea is caused by a lack of muscle tone(muscle atonia). This is a safety mechanism to keep us from acting out our dreams. It's a product of evolution. You can add strength to whatever muscles you want but when the tone is gone it's gone. I honestly believe the cure the cure for this will cause an even bigger problem somewhere else in our systems. Cna't fight evolution.

Maybe, 'evolution' (which is questionable) is not a death sentence after all ?

I just started experimenting with my 'LipTrainer' www.LipTrainer.com and there is actually valid research from hospitals in Japan in reference to strengthening the relevant muscles.

As for fate being hardwired in your DNA, that is suspect to as per the study of Epigenetics and

the work of Bruce Lipton, Ph.D http://www.brucelipton.com/

Like I said Agent 99, you can divorce medicine from politics.   Nothing lives in a vacuum, but a vacuum.  Medicine and 'cures' are subject to human judgement as well as what sorts of treatments get researched further and explored.   I keep on discussion politics, but more in proportion to the important proper treatment of the condition.

Warren Buffett isn't a liberal capitalist, he's more of a (not proper to say in polite company)
