I was just diagnosed with sleep apnea. I had my original sleep study done 2/10/09 at the behest of my husband who observed apnea when I was asleep. Honestly, I thought the test would be negative or would show a mild apnea, but they said I had severe apnea in REM sleep. I had 57 episodes in an hour. Since I am new to this, this means very little to me, and I don't know my AHI number -- didn't even know there was such a number until I started educating myself.
I had a second sleep study done to titrate the CPAP on 3/3/09. I was dreading it because I slept so poorly the first study. Well, my friend the sleep tech (I feel like I know him well after two nights with him) put the nasal cushion mask on me and I slept like a log all night. The best night's sleep I've had in 10 years or more.
I'm a registered nurse about 3/4 of the way through graduate school. I work in pediatrics so I don't know a lot about this condition, but I am ready to learn.

Anne, first and foremost, congratulations on getting diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. By getting the diagnosis and being willing to treat it, you've just added years to your life. Also, sounds as if your adaptation to CPAP will be a smooth one, which is very fortunate, as many of us struggle to be able to sleep with CPAP at first.

You have a very serious case of Sleep Apnea: An AHI of greater than 5 but less than 15 is deemed "mild" sleep apnea; an AHI of greater than 30 indicates "severe" sleep apnea. Yours is 57, That mean that, on average, you stop breathing or have dangerously shallow breathing 57 times an hour! that puts a huge strain on your heart, and the rest of your system as your body struggles to survive/get oxygen.

Keep reading and asking questions. Lots of great support here, which you'll need as the inevitable questions arise.
