New Nasal Device Seeks to Give CPAP a Run For Its Money

It's no secret that a lot of people have trouble adjusting to CPAP, or other positive pressure therapies, to treat their sleep apnea. The conventional estimate is that about 50% of those who are prescribed CPAP have trouble with it, get frustrated and give up. Although I believe the vast majority of these people would succeed with CPAP if their doctors and DME providers would do a better job of educating them on CPAP use, there will always be some portion of the population that cannot tolerate CPAP for one reason or another. And those are the people the Redwood City, California based company Ventus Medical had in mind when they recently unveiled their new nasal device as an alternative to CPAP.

The Provent device, which Ventus says has been cleared by the FDA, fits in the nostrils, and is meant to be used for a night, then disposed of --- no power source; no air blower. Rather, the device, about the size of a quarter, uses the user's own breathing to create pressure that keeps the user's airway open, acting as a splint to treat obstructive sleep apnea. The device is not indicated for central or mixed sleep apnea.

With the former CEO of Revlon leading the device maker as its President and CEO, and having attracted venture capital investment from the likes of Mohr Davidow Ventures and De Novo Ventures, the Provent device is poised to make a splash on the sleep apnea scene.

Whether it proves to be a true alternative to CPAP in terms of effectiveness remains to be seen.

I have seen several posts recently from two people who love this device.  They have not had sleep studues with the device to determine if it's effective.

I was amazed about the amount of negativity surrounding the device from people who have not used it and don't understand how the Provent functions.  Seems to me that  the more options that are out there improves the chances that those who do not tolerate CPAP (and so many CPAPs end up in the closet) can find an alternative that works.  It also seems like it would come in handy on an overnight airplane flight where using your 'PAP device is not an option, during a power outage, and during camping trips or situations without electricity. As one sleep doctor has said it will not put CPAP out of business, but I believe we should encourage research into any alternatives for CPAP that would help people comply with treatment.
