Just got back from tonight's NYC AWAKE meeting. Was gratified to see a pretty good turnout -- something on the order of 30 people, with a lot of professionals as well as inquisitive, smart patients. Chip Smith, the President of Restoration Medical, gave a solid presentation on the pitfalls and potential of CPAP treatment. And Dr. Park, jnk, myself, Tami Oram RPSGT, reps from the major manufacturers and dentists were on hand to answer questions and guide newcomers. I'm really excited to have re-started this up in NYC, and see a bright future for the group in months to come.

We'll update folks who join the NYC AWAKE group on plans for future meetings. We have a great line up of speakers and events planned.

Sounds like a great think tank!
there was a gentleman at tonight's meeting who said he had just been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, had talked to a surgeon who only gave him 50-50 chance of seeing any improvement through surgery, and that he hadn't yet got his machine but was trying to figure out a way not to "spend the rest of his life sleeping with this thing." I served up some tough love. Telling him he better make good friends with that machine, and that he should get into his head that he WILL likely be sleeping with it for the rest of his life. Either that, or he dies earlier on. I also encouraged him to talk to a psychologist about his negative feelings for the machine. My view is he needs to break himself of that way of thinking real quick. I offered to help him any way i could learn to use it.
