HI there, everyone. What a really neat place for people with sleep apnea! My name is Josh and I live in Minnesota. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea about 2-3 years ago. They told me I have a "mild case", but it does not feel that way. I just started using my CPAP machine, again, after not using it for about 1-2 years. It is so hard to get back into it. Even when I did use it, I did not feel much of a difference then. I just got a new mask, it is a Aclaim 2 Nasal Mask. I have used it for 2 nights and did not sleep good at all last night. It really hurts the bottom of my nose, the part that turns into your lip. It feels like there is a big gash there, but there isn't. It is actually comfortable to move around in while sleeping compared to the other 2 I have tried. My pressure is set at a 5 and climbs to 10.
I really want to feel better as I am always tired. No matter what time I go to bed I always wake up about 5 am and I get SO tired between noon and 1 pm. I pretty much take a nap every single day because of getting so tired.

I hope to meet some nice people from here and maybe learn some good tips and tricks to help me.

Thanks for reading,

Josh

Welcome, Josh! You've come to the right place -- tons of good, helpful folks on cpap here. I would recommend you either try a different size nasal cushion or a different mask altogether. i have had quite a bit of luck with the resmed mirage activa nasal mask. it doesn't dig into your face as much as some other masks because it kind of "hovers" full of air over your nose. that's how it's designed.

also, do you have a fully data capable machine -- or rather what kind of machine do you have exactly? it makes a big difference in the advice we'll give you. so what is it?
My machine is a ResMed Autoset Vantage
ResMed's Autoset Vantage is a good, fully data capable machine, so that's a terrific start. i'm not as familiar with the resmeds, but we have some folks here who are experts in it. does the resmed autoset vantage give you 90% pressure data result? my thought is that your pressure might not be high enough. if 90% of the time your machine is at 10, then it's kind of straining up against a ceiling that your doctor has set for you which may not be completely appropriate, or may need some adjustment. so again, what's your 90% pressure reading?

Welcome to the forum, Josh. You have one heck of a good xPAP there w/that Resmed S8 AutoSet Vantage. I have one too. Altho I've been switched to a bi-level PAP, a Resmed VPAP Auto.

Do you know how to access data from your AutoSet Vantage? If not, try this:

Press the Left and Right buttons and hold for 4-5 seconds. Efficacy Data should appear on the LCD screen. If it does then its a simple matter to access quite a bit of data. The button pushes are pretty self-explanatory. Left button to Enter, Right button to Exit, Up button to return to the previous screen, Down button to proceed to the next screen. You can NOT accidentally or intentionally change your therapy settings from this advance patient menu. If Efficacy Data doesn't appear on the LCD screen then access was not turned on by your provider.

You HAVE to access the night's Efficacy Data BEFORE noon. These xPAPs have an internal, twenty four hour, noon to noon clock. At noon the previous night's data is rolled over into the total averages. However, you can still access the week's, months', six months' and year's averages after you've been using your AutoSet Vantage long enough.

The Pressure reported on the LCD screen from the Efficacy Data menu is the pressure AT OR BELOW which you spent 95% of the night, the same holds true for the reported Leak rate. Do you still have the Users Manual for your AutoSet Vantage or have you misplaced it? Do you still have the literature that came w/your mask or have you misplaced that as well?
I have everything that came with my stuff including al the bags :)
You sound like an expert on this. What can you tell by the readings on your screen? Let me phrase that better, what do the nubers mean?
Thhanks!
So we're gonna play "counter questions", eh? Counter a question w/a question? *wicked grin* So what numbers do you want to know about? The "name" is right there w/the number.

Okay, I'll quit pulling your leg and playing games.

AI = apnea index = number of apneas per hour
HI = hypopnea index = number of hypopneas per hour
AHI = apnea/hypopnea index = number of apneas AND hypopneas experienced per hour

Your turn!
I was just curious. I do not know much about these numbers. They wer enot explaine dot me very well. So, if I looked now, it would not be a reading from last nights sleep? What does hypopnea mean?

Thanks?
Hoo boy! Don't go getting technical on me! *wicked grin* Whilst an apnea is a complete obstruction of the airway, an hypopnea is a partial obstruction of the airway. Both result in a reduction in breathing and an 02 desaturation, the apnea being the more serious interruption, of course, as it is an actual cessation of breathing. I'd have to go searching to come up w/the explicit definition for insurance purposes..
If you've been using your xPAP for a week or more, you'll be able to see the weekly average for the most recent week if access to the advance patient menu has been turned on. Go ahead and try it. If Efficacy Data shows up on the LCD screen at least you will know that access has been turned on.
These are the numbers I have - it had week, month, 6 mos, and year. I did the week.

Here goes

9.6
Leak: .06 L/s
AHI 1.2
AI 0.0
HI 1.2

Ok, so what do those mean? Good? Bad? lol

Whats up? New to this site too. New to xpap and trying to figure this stuff ot myself. If you look at my post about headaches you will find some info on the numbers.
Hmmmm. Assuming you are set on the correct Mask Selection, your Leak rate isn't bad at all. A shade high, just a shade. Well w/in compensation range by your Resmed.

BEAUTIFUL AI!! An entire WEEK w/a 0.0 AI!! Most of us would kill for that!! And an HI of 1.2 on a Resmed, especially for a week's average, is GREAT!! Resmeds tend to score HIs more aggressively than other brands.

You are spending 95% of the night AT OR BELOW 9.6 cms of pressure.

As for the Aclaim 2. Try setting it a little lower on your nose. Just a skosh. Its the edge of the cushion that is digging into that area just below the nose/above the lip. Try some Ayr Saline Nasal Gel to toughen the area up a bit. The Aclaim 2 "might" be a shade short for you but w/that data I'd sure be reluctant to change masks just yet!!!

I assume you have the Humidaire 3i integrated humidifier? Too much or too little humidification could conceivably cause headaches.

One last thing: check your Users Manual for how to access Mask Selection. Is it set to Standard? It should be since you are using a non-Resmed mask. The wrong Mask Selection "could" skew your data. But w/data as good as you've just shown us ..... phooey! I don't see how it could possibly screw the data up that bad!!!
