What can I do?
Hi,my name is Paul I have sleep apnea and have no insurance can any one suggest how I can get a cpap with out takeing a second morgage?
I live in Salt Lake City. Thanks

Contact A.W.A.K.E. You can find contact info via a google search. Ask your Dx'ing doctor or sleep labs in the area. Ask the various local DME providers. Ask local churches & your local hospital(s).

Paul, do you have a prescription? Many very good machines at reasonable prices are available at on line retailers. Judy's suggestions are a good place to start.

No I donot have an Rx do I need one to buy a cpap?

You need a prescription unless you buy from a private party such as from classifieds, craigs list, forum member.

IF you don't have a prescription HOW DO YOU KNOW you need a CPAP? How do you KNOW you have obstructive sleep apnea? Or Central sleep apnea?

Right. You need to go to a reputable sleep clinic for testing and get a Rx.

My Dr said thats what it was and before I got my Rx I lost my job and insurance.

Then that is where you start. Request your script from your doctor. Also ask him for any help w/getting a CPAP since you have no insurance.
If you had the sleep evaluation that caused the Dx of OSA but didn't have the titration study to determine your needed pressure then ask your doctor to script a one month loaner APAP. You will most likely have to make-do w/o a humidifier and you may need him to intercede w/a sleep lab to get you a used (sterilized) mask to use that may not be the best mask for you but that will hopefully do the trick to determine what pressure setting you need. The APAP rental will run you about $135 or so for the month.
The only way you are going to be able to buy a CPAP w/o a script is at a rummage sale, thru a newspaper classified ad or craigslist and then, of course, its buyer beware.

I was surprised 2 weeks ago when I visited my DME to see that they had 4 used CPAPs for sale..They were GoodKnights (?), 2 were priced at $75 ea and the other 2 were $125 ea..one was marked as being used by a smoker.
The sign said you had to have a prescription to purchase, so they could set it for you..
So you might check with a local DME to see if they have any coming off rental or something.

Wow, Sherry! I'm surprised too. That's the first I've heard of this being done but its good to hear that there are those local DME providers who are able to do so.
The GoodKnights are phased out Puritain Bennett xPAPs. Their APAP, the 420E or G, I forget which, were VERY MUCH LIKED by those who had them as was the SilverLining software.
