OT: Memorial Day In Our Small Town
Well, while ours is a small town, village actually, you certainly can't say we don't know how to celebrate Memorial Day! The ceremonies were BEAUTIFUL and moving.
Our daughter and her friend from high school rode in the parade. They had a good laugh when her friend's horse took exception to the large letters saying SCHOOL painted on the highway and side stepped around the letters so she didn't have to walk on them - and our horse went into her lip flopping mood when the kids ran into the street to catch the candy being thrown. She doesnt flap those lips quietly! On the other hand she REALLY liked the pipes and stepped right along in rhythm w/them.
The Service Anthems for each branch of service is played and all veterans from that branch are asked to come forward and are given seats of honor right up front for the Memorial services. The US Marines are always last. Two state politicians and a Judge attended our Memorial Day services.
The VMW presented the Wall of Honor. This wall consists of a larger than life dog tag w/the fallen Michigan soldier's name, rank and year they died from the Gulf War to present. A veteran of 12 years service and the Gulf War reminded us that there aer still missing POW's from Michigan.
There was a placing of wreaths and a Rifle Salute and flag presentations.
The Memorial service was beautiful and moving. Who can not be moved by Taps? Our granddaughter and another band member played Taps for the service. And altho Amazing Grace is a beautiful song it is never so beautiful and moving as when played by the bagpipes. We are fortunate to have 4 pipers in the area.
The piper fell but the reaper's chains couldn't bring his wild heart under
The pipes he loved would never sound again for he tore its drones asunder
He said, "No chains shall sully thee, the voice of strength and bravery
Thy songs were made for the pure and free, they shall never sound in slavery".

The Bagpipers in War and Peace
The role of bagpipers throughout world military history is well documented. Known as fierce warriors, their strength and bravery earned the respect of both allies and enemies. The songs they played signified troop maneuvers much like the bugle in more recent American history. Dressed in kilts, pipers became known as "The Ladies From Hell" due to the extreme nature of their battlefield skills.
In more recent history, the piper has become a symbol of the qualities modern soldiers represent: Strength, Honor, Bravery and Courage. It is considered an honor to be lead by a piper, yet when facing great men, the piper feels honored to be allowed to lead. Few ethnic instruments share such universal acceptance when occasions arise to honor fellow countrymen.

We are doing a flag and candle ceremony tonight in our neighborhood. We built a memorial a few years back for our veterans. The bricks are engraved with the names of all of those who have served. It is a big thing for one of our own to sign up. We always send them away and then recieve them home in grand fashion.

I just so resent BushBaby, Cheney and Rummy sending our young men and women into Iraq. For that matter I resent Afghanistan and Nam and Korea as well. Senseless sending of our young people to be sent to be killed and maimed and encounter horrors we can't even imagine for nothing. For the ego of a bunch of politicians. I just don't see it as our duty to force democracy on others. Its enough to keep our own nose clean and to keep our own nation in order. It would seem that WW II was our last "honest" war.
