Should We Make a CPAP is Sexy Calendar?
Walt raised this idea on a thread about CPAP Vanity/Sex Appeal (or lack thereof)
I"ve brought up the idea of a calender in the lines of "cpap is sexy" and have pt's actually pose (clothed and in good taste) in their beds with their cpap devices and the proceeds going to charity...So far, none of the major players of cpap have opted to sign on.
- This is my response (below). What does everyone think?
- I like the idea of a CPAP is sexy calendar. you've run it by ResMed and Respironics and they're not into it? maybe we can design our own CPAP is sexy calendar. Everyone start by uploading a photo of themselves to the Photos section of this site -- rules are like you said: "(clothed and in good taste) in their beds with their cpap devices" -- then we can all vote on which ones make the cut, and SleepGuide can fund the costs of printing? the key would be getting people to upload appropriate photos. think we should try it?

There are people who do extremely well with CPAP and there are others who just can't tolerate it. And there are people who do well on oral appliances and those who do not. Aren't we both after the same thing - the best way to treat our common patients? In this field of medicine there is no room for technique-based squabbles or territorial disputes, there are too many sick people out there who rely on physicians, dentists, technologists, PhDs etc. to help them get well.
Are our patients best served by figuring out what the best therapeutic regimen is best for each individual patient and using that technique to treat or by constantly arguing about which technique is better than the other.

A mouth full of hardware, drool running down the cheeks, teeth migrating away from where they belong, and incomplete resolution of sleep apnea is not sexy at all.

OK, it was a joke. I appreciate that and am happy about the rapid development of your business providing oral devices. I do hope your dentists put fear of "failure to treat" in the minds of their patients.
Now would you care to address this, "A mouth full of hardware, drool running down the cheeks, teeth migrating away from where they belong, and incomplete resolution of sleep apnea is not sexy at all." or provide some good links (layman terms please) that discuss it?
BTW, there is an excellent boil-n-bite appliance available in Europe and Canada that I will purchase on my next trip. I intend to use it along with CPAP and have it on hand for sole use during such emergencies as power failures. A pox on the FDA for restricting my ability to buy it!

Good post , Banyon. Can't you find a Canadian or European company to buy that boil and bite appliance from? I know some are available here, but they don't measure up? Maybe 99, or some of our other International posters could help us out? The idea of using one during a power outage or similar condition is excellent.
I've bought absinthe from Czechoslovakia before. Unless that boil and bite is prescription it seems like you should be able to get one. If you know the name of it, I'll try to track it down.

They will not ship to the U.S. because it requires FDA approval and the expense of getting the approval is very high.
So the FDA approves drugs that kill and maim people, but they won't let me buy a boil-n-bite device. Ridiculous.

Mike, I'm afraid this would not be the type calender we would want- I think it would be more for a BDSM niche (which I hear is headed toward a trend in medical procedures, I personally do not know).
Perhaps folks just posed with their very sexy equipment, a different machine and mask for every month. Or a progression from older machines to newer machines.

Yeah....don't think we need to go with the BDSM theme...
I was just thinking more of folks in bed, wearing their normal pjs, cpap devices on, subtle lighting, and long stem red laying next to their head.... think about it folks....it would go over big...

Mike, I have had so many ...what I call repeat offenders..having retitrations due to their mask not working. What is revealed is they are not wearing their mask in the first place because...its not sexy or they are afraid their partner will no longer find them attractive. ...such a calender done tongue and cheek may have some influence on such people..... who can find nPAP sexy not one person I know., but a comical look may ease some tension. it would give the patients some ease at laughing at themselves, this is their life and health.
