Get Enlarged Tonsils Removed?
Should Enlarged Tonsils be removed question from a member:
My pcp has never told me about going to a ent. to get my tonsils checked? My pcp told one time they were enlarged.. My question is do you think that if i did get a tonsillectomy and adneoidectomy. do you think it makes a difference with sleep apnea? or actual helps with it... I am just looking at all of my options and make sure I am doing the right thing . If you can please give me any advice you have that would be great. thanks so much for your time

here's my $0.02 --- I myself have enlarged tonsils and have been told to get surgery, but I've decided not to. The reason is that the surgery is very painful to recover from, and i do just fine with the CPAP machine. Also, it's not clear that if i have the surgery I will not have to use the CPAP too, because i have a variety of obstructions, not just with my tonsils.

I am obviously not a pro but I can tell you what I was told by an ENT years ago. He said my tonsils had once ben enlarged but now they had shrunken and removing them would be of no help to me.
I don't really know what he meant and keep meaning to ask my PCP if he would know. I was young and stupid and didn't ask the ENT. I do know that I got tons of Strep Throats from the time I was in Middle School until a few years after graduation from college.

From my understanding our tonsils are of use until we are about 7 and then they loose their ability to fight infections. So after this time they begin to go smaller and by the time we are adults they are normally hardly visible. Some people do, however, seem to have a chronic low grade infection in their tonsils and although this infection nearly always clears up they are left with enlarged tonsils. If these tonsils stretch to the uvula then they possibly can cause some obstruction .... but to have a tonsillectomy as an adult needs to be carefully thought about!

amen, this a very painful surgery to recover from as an adult. I had mine removed 2 years ago. It was absolutely no help. My new doctor said I should have not had it done. It only made treating my apnea harder.
