We have an educational booth at the hospital this week in honor of "Sleep Awareness Week". I had a chance to sit with marketing and shadow our inpatient apnea screeners. These are 2 highly underestimated jobs in sleep. Our marketing lady and apnea screener are both RRT/RPSGTs. Their knowledge is truly amazing. It was inspiring to see so many everyday people that were interested in how they were sleeping. I believe that the importance of healthy sleep is truly getting out.

Following the screeners was a real treat. This job allows us to approach and discuss sleep with the most at risk for apnea. Our screeners go through the cardiac ward talking to different patients about the importance of correcting their sleep. We get reports from nurses and doctors on high risk patients. I was able to assist in educating a newly diagnosed diabetic on the importance of getting good sleep. Altogether we were able to book 3 studies which may not have happened without this service. It was a good day for this sleep geek.

Rock -- the most inspiring thing about this story to me is not only what you are actually doing, but how much joy it seems to give you. It's a wonderful thing to be able to make your living doing what you love, as you well know. I would have loved to shadow you guys for those discussions. Seems as if your hospital is really on the cutting edge when it comes to screening in-patients. Don't know that many other hospitals are equally up to snuff.
Overall my hospital does a great job. I do not always give them enough credit.
I agree with Mike, when I was a hemodialysis nurse it was like pulling teeth to get me out to take people's blood pressures, or talk about kidney failure at an event. Kidney failure is a pretty exciting field, too, as it can impact your life in more ways that you can imagine. I applaud you for getting out there and spreading the word about OSA. The people in the hospital make the hospital great though good leadership is a must.
