We recently had a student at school that was having trouble sleeping, snoring, etc. He didn't have a sleep study done to see if he actually had apnea, but the doctor recommended, and mother agreed, to have his tonsils, adnoids, and I am unsure what else removed.

He had been diagnosed with ADHD and was on medication for it. Viola, got the sleep straightened out and he is no longer on meds, sleeping through the night without the snoring and tossing and turning. Mom says he is a completely different child and can't believe the difference. Teachers are amazed as well.

The surgery did wonders for my daughter. AHI went from 8 to 0. ADHD tendencies are gone. As soon as I can find a surgeon that can get the smart ass out of her mouth all will be fine.
The odds are stacked against my daughter though. More than likely she will develop apnea later in life. w\We may even have to visit the ADHD spectrum again. For now all is good.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19620583?ordinalpos=1&itool=...

CONCLUSIONS: Improvements in sleep experienced by children after adenotonsillectomy for sleep-disordered breathing were not as great 2.5 years after surgery as they were 6 months after surgery but were still significant compared with baseline levels. Improvements in behavior were maintained in all categories of the Conners scores except for the ADHD index.
Referral requested when you find that provider.

This is wonderful information! my son is extremly hyper, and we all have complained that he snores! my question and my problem is, hes a 6'5" teenager now and doesnt like doing anything different from normal routine (i can only imagine the results of telling him he has to wear a mask at night?) any suggestions?

Leave her alone Rock. She is a 21st century woman. In your latter years she will offer you an excellent paying job where you have daylight hours. She might even let you use one of her seaside villas for your vacations. ;)
Your probably right Banyon. LOL

According to my daughters THEIR daughters need a referral as well. In grandma's opinion, they can do no wrong!!!

Oh did I say that -- I better not let my girls hear me!! LOL
Childhood ADD/ADHD is caused by OSA and the treatment for is Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy (T&A).

At a minimum, a sleep study should be done after T&A has healed to be certain their are no residual apneas. A pre and postop sleep study is much nicer to have for comparison. If the post op AHI is 0, then the problem is resolved. If the post op AHI is greater than 0, then there is more work to be done.

By the way, I feel the same in regards to autism.

Oh, and while I am at it, SIDS is caused by undiagnosed and untreated OSA. (these are my opinions until I am proven otherwise). MJ
Very helpful post Mack D Jones!!

I didn't realize there maybe a connection associated with autism. I have two autistic children at school (I teach special ed). One parent seems very open to ideas and thoughts and I will tell them that a sleep study maybe beneficial.

SIDS is a heartbreaker. My brother lost two babies to SIDS and there is always a constant worry within our family when babies are in the family.
