Covidien Cleans House
This is borrowed from Wulfman's post at cpap.com but I thought it very worth while to spread the word. Covidien purchased Puritan Bennett not all that long ago. Puritan Bennett has produced excellent xPAPs and patient available software for quite a few years.

MANSFIELD, Mass. - Covidien's getting out of the home respiratory and sleep businesses to focus on more profitable, faster-growing product lines, the company stated in a release last week.
According to the release:
Caire, a wholly owned subsidiary of Chart Industries, has acquired Covidien's oxygen therapy products. The deal includes products under the Companion and Helios brands, as well as design, manufacturing, sales and service functions worldwide. Caire currently manufactures a full line of liquid oxygen reservoirs and liquid oxygen portables under the Liberator and Spirit brands.
Chart Industries expects the deal to boost its biomedical division's sales by more than 50% to approximately $150 million annually, CEO Sam Thomas stated in a release.
Embla, part of Iceland's privately held Flaga Group, will buy Covidien's sleep diagnostics products for an undisclosed amount. This transaction includes products under the Sandman brand, as well as design/development, sales administration, technical service and shipping facilities in Ottawa, Canada, and global sales and service functions.
Covidien also plans to sell its sleep therapy product line. This includes several products sold under the Sandman brand, as well as the DreamFit, GoodKnight and Breeze brands.
In fiscal 2008, sales of these three product lines totaled about $175 million.

funny. Resmed has been posting record growth/revenues year after year, quarter after quarter, for as long as i have been following them. makes me think that the reason for the deal is marketing baloney: "Covidien's getting out of the home respiratory and sleep businesses to focus on more profitable, faster-growing product lines"
Wonder what the real reason for the deal was. My guess is that Embla made them an exceptionally rich offer.

Ah, but Mike, you have to keep in mind that the US is the LARGEST xPAP market AND Philipps Respironics (PR) and Resmed have cornered 80% of the xPAP market! That leaves the other 20% to Covidien, Fisher & Paykel, DeVilbiss and Breas. Ever hear of Breas??
There is some tie between Resmed and Embla. I think I read that Resmed had purchased Embla , or maybe just their oximetry technology or "division". Resmed uses only Nonin for their oximetry via the S8 ResLink - but my "Nonin" XPod oximeter is an Embla. There is "some" tie there but I can't remember the exact sequence. I "think" it is DeVilbiss which also uses the Nonin oximeter. I'm not sure if it is a different model Nonin - or - whether it is simply a different "plug" specific to their device. I strongly suspect that it just a matter of different "plugs" to keep the oximeter proprietary to the specific company, i.e. DeVilbiss and Resmed, etc.

I'm not too familiar with Breas, no. Well, I have nothing against resources going to the party that's most eager to move forward with them. So I with Embla the best of luck. And I hope to hear that they're taking market share away from the big boys through successful innovation. This industry could certainly use the competition to give it a swift kick in the butt forward.

I've read the history of Resmed. From Dr Sullivan forward. I thought maybe I had posted it or a link to it here, maybe in the articles section. Maybe I didn't. But their manner of growth, often thru acquisition, was VERY interesting and where I read of their "link" to Embla. As I said, maybe they acquired just one of Embla's "divisions". My memory just "ain't" what it used to be!!!!
Gads, used to be I could read an article of interest and 2 years later remember WHICH magazine I read it in, the approximate issue and what side of the page it was on. Them thar days iz lonnnnnng gone. *sigh* Now I forget too soon and suffer from information overload that just does NOT file itself away properly each night. *sigh* My brain's "filing system" is shot.

I believe that Embla has some ties with respironics. I am pretty sure that the software that Embla uses for it's home studies is the same as Alice PSG software.

I found another reference to the Embla and Resmed relationship I mentioned earlier and was so vague about.
In 1999, Flaga formed a strategic alliance with US-based ResMed Inc., a company specializing in the development, manufacturing and distribution of therapy devices for sleep disordered breathing. The alliance positioned Flaga and ResMed with a complete product range, offering their customers both sleep diagnostics and associated therapy from one source.
