I am a new CPAP user and what makes me most uncomfortable is how I feel when I begin breathing without it when I get up. It feels like my body has forgotten how to breathe and I have to consciously be taking breaths in stead of automatically doing so. Is this normal to feel this way? I get up every hour or two whether I use the machine or not.

i know this might not be helpful, but i haven't heard of this happening to anyone before. hopefully others will have had experience with it and let you know.
I tell you, I do have such an easier time breathing in general with my mask on. And sometimes I've wished I could just wear it all day! It does make it easier for me. My nasal passages are chronically swollen, even when I'm not having bad allergies or anything, and so I've always breathed thru my mouth, day and night. But with my mask on I actually can breathe through my nose and feel I'm getting enough air. I wish I always felt that way!

Also, I have had times when I just didn't feel I was getting enough oxygen. Like I couldn't breathe deep enough. I'm trying to recall if I had the mask at that time or not. I think it was right around when I got the cpap. I actually went to the doctor about it. They just evaluated me and confirmed that I do have asthma (have since I was a kid, but never knew it). I wonder if you might have something going on like that. It's worth asking your doc about!
I have asthma as well. It is easier for me to breathe with the machine than without when laying down. I notice when I get up in the morning that the first few breaths are more difficult. Especially if I shut off my APAP before I sit up. I do notice a lingering effect of the feeling of having been breathing...ya know? Like you have been running and your lungs feel full? I like that a lot, I know I have been getting some good quality breathing at night...because my lungs tell me I have. Hang in there you will get used to the feeling of using the CAPAP soon.
Leah,
I have looked but I don't see any information such as:
1. What is your treatment? CPAP, APAP, BiPAP
2. What brand of machine and model?
3. What are your setting?
4. What mask are you using?
5. Have you recovered any data from you machine?

Why or for what reason are you waking up every 2 hrs.? What does the cause appear to be?

The answers to these questions may give the "pros from Dover" a place to start helping you.
sounds to me like one of two things pap settings are to low or your having an asthma attck.. and how new are you to the pap?
I am on a CPAP machine Resmed H4i. The machine begins at 5 and goes up automatically while I sleep. When I get up it is usually between 8 and 11. I wear a full mask that covers my mouth and nose. No info has been recovered from my machine as yet. I get up to use the bathroom every couple hours unless I am very, very tired or on pain meds.

I have had it for several weeks but don't use it regularly because of the feeling I get on waking. I am asthmatic but the feeling is not like an asthma attack. My tubes feel clear. It just feels like I have forgotten how to breathe automatically.

Leah,
I think you may have a Resmed S8 VPAP Auto 25. You can recover some of the data each morning directly from the LCD display on the unit. Just jot down all the outputted data from the display. Your owner's manual will direct you how too. Link to user's guide - http://www.resmed.com/us/assets/documents/product/vpap_auto_25/user...

You may also want to check you machine and see if it is set to the "Settle" function. (also now as the ramp function) A lot of folks don't do well with this function turned on. If you have mask leaks, they don't show up until after you drift off to sleep and the *PAP therapy is useless if this rate is too high.

Just a note - make sure you are using distilled water in the humidifier. If you aren't, you may want to switch to it as the impurities in bottled or tap water could be triggering a reaction.

Make sure you are adjusting your mask in the supine (laying down - face up) position. If you fit it while sitting, you are not getting it adjusted properly.

One thing I noticed once I started CPAP therapy is the bathroom trips every 2 hours (you could set your clock by it) stopped - right them.

You also need to get copies of your sleep study and your prescription for your records. THIS IS IMPARITIVE.

Before anyone can start offering suggestions in so far as settings and possible adjustments, etc, your base settings need to be known.

You are also going to find that your DME does care to help you acclimate to the therapy. They will bend over backwards to help get the insurance forms correct so they can get paid, but the majority only make sure you get your machine and want to keep selling you supplies.

keep on trying I am at the point I cant sleep without it It feels so much better to sleep with it after a while you will be almost addicted to it so to speak I still get up a few times a night but I dont think its that plus you really have got to get used to it it shouldn't take to long but once you do you feel so much better I promise...
I have the most amazing news! I just started on my CPAP about a week ago, and last night I actually lasted all night with it on. I did wake up once because I had apparently rolled over on my stomach which cause the mask to leak. I reset it and drifted right back to sleep. I did find out the cause of the air blowing out feeling stuffy was that the temperature in my room. It was just a little cooler last night and I think that the coolness made a difference. When I woke up this morning I actually felt like I had slept for a lot longer than I had. I feel so good this morning and am so glad to finally have a solution not only to the apnea, but to this whole wanting to sleep all day long...
My machine has a humidity adjust on it If you keep having problems see about changing cpap's to one with that it helps me alot...

My machine has the humidifier on it as well. I am just starting out, so I haven't fine tuned it yet. Hopefully soon though. As my DME says it takes patience...not to mention constistancy
