New York Times Does Great Job with Sleep Apnea Feature

This is one of the best "stories" on sleep apnea that I've seen in a newspaper: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/05/13/health/healthguide/TE...

It goes beyond the same old dull and often repeated cliches and gets at a lot of truth about sleep apnea: a first as far as I'm concerned for the American media.

Bravo, New York Times. You knocked this one out of the park!

Rock, the story of the last gentleman portrayed in this series sounds a lot like your difficult patients: he refused to put the mask on for the titration and the sleep lab said, "well then, leave." And he did.
some criticisms of this: they don't feature anyone using an oral appliance and the first guy seemed to have been miraculously cured by a simple surgical procedure, which isn't a common occurrence.
I will fight for a patients right to live. I would never tell a patient to go. I have heard of other techs doing this, but I personally will not. I usually explain to them that the doctor wants to see if it will work for them. Then in the morning I show them their first study. When someone can actually see themselves dying it is an eye opening experience. At this point I hit em with the titration or "proof of cure study" as I have come to call it. At this point I usually have them hook line and sinker. My problem this week was that I had a few patients that no matter what I said, or did they would not let me do my job. They would not look at the study. They would not put on a mask. I did everything I could. Patients have to decide to leave on their own.

As far as this publication. I think it is great publicity for the cause. whether it is positve or negative publicity it all promotes awareness.
