I failed my titration study. I only used my bipap 33 percent and in order for my insurance to pay for it I have to use it 70 percent. I really need this machine but in my sleep I take it off because I have claustrophobia. I don't know I'm doing it. When I find out I've done it, I put it back on. It happens several times a night. I think when I feel that air rush in, it scares me. I don't know what to do

Donna,
First thing is to calm down. We will need more information to possible help you. What is your machine type, the settings. what mask are you using and basically all the details you can provide. Once you provide those, I am sure the suggestions to help will roll in. You are not alone. Everyone has a problem with *PAP at some point and a solution may be as close as your fingertips.
The machine that I was using was a Resperonics bipap titration machine. My mask covers my nose and mouth. But this isn't my first time. I was first diagnosed in 2002 and I was given a cpap machine. I had to change masks several times. Needless to say, I didn't continue with it. The main reason I'm trying so hard to use it all over again is because I was diagnosed with diabetes this past march. (what a birthday present). I'm trying harder to wear it so I can become as healthy as I can. I've started going to the gym and my sugar levels are down.

There are hundreds of different styles of masks. It could very well be that the one you are using is not the one for you. You could try and wear the mask during the day to try and acclimate your self to the mask.
Kudos to you Donna for hopping back on the saddle and trying to get compliant with your CPAP therapy once again. What is your durable medical equipment provider telling you? Are they saying that you have to pay for the machine out of pocket now because your insurance company won't?
Let me get this clear, the local DME supplier has taken the Respironics xPAP back and you have no xPAP now except the old one given to you in 2002? Or you don't even have that one anymore?

OR - you do still have the Respironics but the local DME supplier is threatening to take it back because you aren't using it enough to qualify for payment?

IF you still have either one of them either look on the cover of the Users Manual that came w/it or look on the top of the xPAP itself and tell us EXACTLY what it says so we know EXACTLY what brand and model xPAP you have.

The mask that you have - or had - was a full face mask. Do you still have the literature that came w/it? That will tell us exactly which mask it is. If you don't, look on the headgear and mask frame, etc. real close and tell us EXACTLY what they say.

Have you tried the nasal pillows? For some people it is easier to tolerate than having a mask on your face.
I use to do the same thing in my sleep I would pull the mask off. What I had to do was wear it for a few hours during waking hours. Like when I was watching TV or Reading I would wear it. This appeared to condition my brain to know that the mask is suppose to be there. This took me about 4 months to stop pulling my mask off. Res Med makes a swift LT for women (nasal Pillows). The main thing is not give up. There are other opition like Bipap, etc. talk to your doctor. Is your doctor a sleep specialist?

I have a very old machine. Respironics Auto Domestic,. Model No. 7410. Serial number 80052400 (tranquilty). I was given this after I failed the first time a few years ago and wasnt able to get a new one. I have two masks. An older one: Mirage Quattro - small, and my most recent one: Ultra Mirage full face mask - medium. What I'm trying to do now is get a new Respironics bipap machine. My first machine that I ever got was a cpap. I hope I'm explaining it ok. I actually forgot about this one until I received this reply. It was under my bed. Is this one too old? Can I have this one set up?

It may be that your local DME supplier or your sleep doctor would be willing to work w/you w/this older CPAP and if you can prove compliance w/it they could convince your insurance company to provide you w/a newer xPAP better suited to your needs now. It sure is worth a try!!!

I'm not familiar w/the Respironics but I do know there are those in the cpaptalk forum who are familiar w/the Tranquility as I've seen it mentioned and some of their members have been on CPAP and cpaptalk since that forum's inception. Plus there may well be an RT or sleep doctor in this forum who is familiar w/it. I'm sure between the two forums we can most likely get you set up properly w/the Tranquility for now. Do you still have the Users Manual for it?

Also I would suggest as your first step that you talk some real turkey w/your sleep doctor and local DME about this Tranquility and your strong desire to make CPAP therapy work for you. If they see you making a strong effort they may be willing to put forth more effort to help you.

You are doing the right thing, Donna! Dig out that Tranquility and see if the local DME or your sleep doctor will help you w/it. If not - we will find someone for you who will.
Donna, in the dim recesses of my memory I seem to remember something about the way Respironics devices count sleep "sessions" that MIGHT have something do to with your low compliance rate. There MIGHT be a possibility that you were not "credited" w/all the "sleep sessions" you actually used your xPAP and mask if you took it off more times a night than the Respironics could count a "session". For one thing the M Series is KNOWN for dropping data one or two nights a month (plenty of attestations to that at cpaptalk) and if didn't count all the sleep "sessions" during the night .....

Now, don't count this as gospel until we get some EXPERIENCED ong time Respironics users who also have the software and can clarify things. As I said, this was just something from the dim recesses of my memory regarding a brand and models of xPAP I have absolutely no experience with. I have NEVER used a Respironics M Series.
