Another question for the group--I am very new to cpap and the last couple of nights I wake up not because any leaks, just wake up and cannot fall back to sleep....is this part of the course of becoming accustomed to cpap therapy?????

I am starting to feel like I am going backwards instead of frontwords, if you can share if you had/have similar experiences I would appreciate your feedback

this is happening to my wife now, who is also very new to cpap. but with her, there was a reason: the humidifier was on too high, and she was experiencing "rainout" and water in her nose. there are some whose bodies kind of 'protest' a bit because of this strange new contraption it is being forced to use, and that might be going on for you. on the other hand, there might be a problem contributing to your body's 'protest'. Do you have dry mouth? Are you swiping the mask off your face because the pressure is too high or because the mask hurts?
I do find since my allergies have acted up that I have a drier mouth than usual....but, I just chalked it up to the medication could the dry mouth be the reason for this???? Is there anything I can do for this problem??? I really don't want to go backwards.....I am determined to get better this site really has helped me so much, I thought for a while there I was the only person who had these problems....

Thanks for being so consistent with your repsonses Mike, any information or suggestions I am more than willing to try......
What time of the night are you waking up? The reason I ask is that sometimes people on CPAP will find that they don't need to go to bed as early or sleep as long. This is due to the fact that you are gretiing a better quality of sleep.
I have been going to bed around midnight, last night I awoke at 3:30 am, the night before it was 5:00 am.....
Belinda, i mentioned dry mouth because dry mouth is something that i started getting once i started CPAP and i learned that it was a sign that i was opening up my mouth unwittingly at night, causing the pressurized air from CPAP to escape. this might cause you to wake up from your sleep. especially if you have allergies, you'll find it harder to breathe through your nose, so you'll naturally open your mouth and mouth breathe to compensate. the answer to that is to work with your allergist to get the allergies under control. you can also try a chinstrap. on the other hand, it might be what rock's saying that you're just getting better quality of sleep than you have before with cpap, and in a shorter amount of time than before. so in other words, your 4 or 5 hours of cpap sleep may feel as good to your body as 8 or 9 hours of sleep without the cpap...

I have taken a look at your list and that explains alot, I will be seeing an allergist soon and I am in the process of ordering a better chin strap.....the Respironics Deluxe Chin strap was mentioned on this site as being good. You may be right about the good quality of sleep as well, time will tell I guess....

Thanks again Mike
