Sleep Apnea is behind many notorious accidents, like the Exxon Valdez, as well as other not so well known accidents, like this one that happened in Utah

Correction as of 4/29/2009: It was sleep loss on the part of the Valdez's third mate, not sleep apnea, which played a role in the grounding of the Exxon Valdez.

I thought the Exon Valdez pilot was drunk. I could be wrong, but that is what I remember hearing.
i stand corrected -- i knew sleep played some role, but it turns out it was not sleep apnea. I just did a google search and found out that the NTSB ultimately determined that a primary cause of the Exxon Valdez disaster was sleepiness on the part of its third mate. Dr. Kasey Li's site also points to many devastating events that can be partially attributed to sleep deprivation and sleep-related disorders: the tragedy at the Union Carbide chemical plant in Bhopal, India; the nuclear reactor meltdowns at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl; the grounding of the Exxon Valdez oil tanker; and an error in judgment contributing to the space shuttle Challenger explosion.
I weill have to check out that site when I get home.
