Has anyone lately tried Provent "plugs" ?
Tags:
No. this has been the talk of sleep the last few days.
A friend, who has NOT used CPAP, has tried Provent. He doesn't like it much and has offered to give me the rest of his plugs.
My friend is extremely resistant to CPAP. I don't know how severe his SA is: maybe he can get away without treatment.
Me? I'm afraid to try anything without approval/supervision. Reason: I'm aware of three sleep apnea-related deaths. "There but for the grace of God...." and all that. Thus I'm willing to try Provent but only with approval and supervision.
I read of two people on another forum who used them and liked them.
For those in the northern VA and Washington DC area, our support group meeting at 7 pm eastern tonight is about Provent. For more information, see our Prince William Co support group here on this site.
wonder why all the buzz over Provent in the past few days. the thing has been out there for a few years. . .
They have been marketing it hard lately is all because medicare will pay for them. I jsut have one issue with it and that is that most patients are mouth breathers and how does provent work if you have your mouth open and are bypassing your nose. I also wonder since it is supposedly at an equivilent of 7-9cwp what good does it do for a pt who needs higher pressure like many of our patients
What is Provent? I am not familiar with this. Guess I'll have to look it up!!!
Yes, I tried Provent discs and I can't use them. Felt like I was being suffocated. And had a strange feeling in my neck like the air was backing up. It's fairly easy to breathe in, but breathing out is another matter. I hate schlepping my CPAP when I go on vacation, but have used up the trial pack of Provent, and could only keep them on for a maximum of about 5-10 minutes. And, they're expensive. When I bought them, insurance wouldn't pay.
Thank you! Not sure I want to try them!

You're welcome. Perhaps they'll give you a pair just to try.

I assume that mouth breathers can use chin straps along with their Provents just as we do with our CPAPS.

Zollistar, I don't know how the chin strap would work unless you tolerated the Provent restricted nasal breathing while awake. Dr. Rapoport talked about Provent in a seminar and said most people breathe through their mouth while awake with Provent and then just naturally change over to nasal breathing when asleep. I was told I was a mouth breather during a sleep test so asssume I mouth breathe during the night. I don't think it would work for me, but in an emergency may be better than nothing.
