Does anyone know a MMA (jaw) surgeon w/ sleep apnea expertise in / near NYC (New York City).

I am 27 year old male, slim/good shape, and healthy diet - surprised to recently be diagnosed with sleep apnea @ Sleep Disorders Institute, my grandparents have it and according to Dr. Park (ENT), I am genetically disposed and would most benefit from MMA due to recessed chin (relative basis).  I am using CPAP and have evaluated other alternatives already.

In short, it appears most/all the surgeons that specialize in this surgery (w/ sleep apnea focus) are at Stanford/west coast.

Obviously with CIGNA and living in NYC, it would be great if could meet with a surgeon here in NYC that has performed this surgery in the context of treating sleep apnea.  Given this is major surgery, willing to travel to ensure correct surgeon but not desirable.

Recommedations and also feedback would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

I am putting out some feelers on this and should have some names shortly. As you no doubt know by now, Kasey Li out of Stanford has a really good reputation.  There's a woman on this forum who had the MMA surgery out of Stanford - her profile name is Sha.  You might do a search on our forum using the search tool in upper right corner under the keywords: sha MMA surgery   --- or you can follow this link and just look up her activity : http://www.sleepguide.com/profile/sha?xg_source=profiles_memberList

that will get you started.  in meantime, i'll search for the real answer to your question, who is someone in NYC

Thank you Mike, much appreciated.

Dr Steve Park should be able to give you some names of physicians in NYC. I am only familiar with Dr Li's work at Stanford. This was way back in 2005 when I signed up for an MMA, but cancelled after I researched the literature and discovered post-op almost no one achieves a zero AHI. For example, as I recall, Dr Li reported over 200 cases from the 90's with only one patient reaching that goal. What bugged me was the claim of 95% "success rate," but on closer inspection, "success" meant a reduction of the AHI by 50% or greater. That meant that you could be left with an AHI of 49% of the pre-op AHI and considered a "success." I had an AHI of 47, so if I had gone ahead and had the surgery an wound up with an AHI of say 20, I would have been classified "a success." I my book, that is a "failure." (note: this was seven years ago, so there may have been some improvements that I am not aware of since then). Of course I don't have to tell you that you should check out the potential risks before signing the dotted line.
