At our local AWAKE meeting last night, the Respironics rep there said dryness was the number 1 complaint among CPAP users.   I didn't expect that -- thought it would be mask leak or mask fitting or mouth breathing.

My own #1 complaint is mouth breathing.  What is everyone's else's?

Hello! Just wondering what machine you have? My partner used to use an older Respironics that sounded like aircraft coming in for a landing. I got to the point that it was my white noise. It was interesting when I got my machine as it was so quiet compared to his. He went into the sleep dr and was given the same one I have. It took us a while to get used to the lack of noise, but it was worth it. Tis a bummer on the separate bedrooms, but it is better for you to have the machine than not to. Take care darlin!

my biggest problem is the noise from the machine and the mask -- it has caused the need for separate bedrooms for my wife and i and that cant be good in the long term - but dying in my sleep is not a good option either . other than the noise it's the head gear and can't someone integrate a good chin strap into the whole thing
I get a huge amount of complaints about dryness. I also find that many of my pts do not use the humidifier because it is warm. Thsi obviously can be an issue in the south where it can be quite dry.
I agree! I just can't seem to get anything to fit my face with any comfort at all! the nasal pillows won,t work, they leak too bad.
I need a full mask but can't find one that is comfortable at all.

My biggest issue is getting the mask to fit comfortably, while at the same time minimizing the leaks. I can get the leaks down to zero, of course, if I tighten the mask all the way, but then it will be so uncomfortable that I'll never sleep!
I have been using a Resmed Quartro mask for two years. I change the cushion once a month. I use cream on the area affected before putting the mask on. I tighten the straps just tight enough to avoid leaks. It is very comfortable.
I hear ya!  It's not the straps that make the marks, though.  It's the edge of the mask.

The marks that the straps leave? they stay on for a few hours. I am just concerned that there will come a point to where they are permanent indentions.
Please let me know what that cream is and where it is sold.

I have been using a CPAP machine for about 6 years. The only problem that I had in the past was the mask leaving marks on my face. I solved that problem about a year ago by using the cream that is sold for that purpose. I love my machine and could not seleep without it.
Doesn't that mask have a cushion that should be contacting your face instead of the edge of the mask?  Even though it's very comfortable perhaps it's not the mask for you since it's leaving marks on your face.
I have Lincare as well and couldn't have been happier at first, but in recent months they aren't using their automated supply system anymore. I get supplies I didn't order, don't get called at all or have to call them.

No mouth breathing since I got my chin strap, to which I'm now quite accustomed. No dryness anymore, either, since (1) my machine is humidified and (2) my mouth stays closed. I used to get condensation in the tube, but I stopped that by keeping my room from getting cold. Mask leaks are becoming much less frequent, so I guess I've gotten much better at adjusting the straps and the angle of the nasal pillow. It occurs to me, just now, that I've been sleeping through the night lately -- and by gosh, I do feel better.

My #1 complaint is that my DME, Lincare, simply cannot get their act together and mail my supplies on a regular schedule. I am constantly calling them to get replacements, and then they have to get insurance authorization, which holds it up for one or more weeks. You'd think they would have a system in place -- say, a calendar? -- so they could request authorization in advance and I could get the supplies on time, but this seems to be beyond their abilities. My doctor told me she's heard the same thing about them from other patients.

Lincare. Definitely Lincare.
I guess other than the Lincare problem I already addressed I have resolved most of my problems. I occasionally have some leaking, but the marks are gone thanks to Quietus liners. I use the humidifier all the time or my nose & throat do dry out. The mask fit isn't perfect & until they custom make one to fit each of our faces they won't be perfect. I feel better upon waking and have more energy so something must be right!
dryness in mouth which is probably caused by the pressure of CPAP, I assume. #2 would just be discomfort from having nose & moth covered. #3 Getting comfortable on one's pillow to go to sleep, #4 not being able to take a short nap without the #X@ thing one.   And until my mask worked,  leaks.  OOPS~you asked just for #1, didn't you???
Why don't you have the tubes put in Mike? I don't get why you are giving up.

I suppose MY biggest complaint is bizarre?  After learning from the ground up how to survive and even thrive using APAP....I have quit completely about 6 weeks ago. 4 months, 4 sinus infections and after seeing every "specialist" in San Diego Scripps Hospital System, the best they came up with was I need to have both ear drums punctured & TUBES put in.

When I spoke to Dr Park on one of his shows, he explained that this would be a very LAST resort. Since I have also tried all the other options Dr Park also reiterated, I decided I would let nature take it's own course and have walked away. I find it sad that in modern times, with myself WELL insured and with Medicare as well as supplemental insurance, I find this to be my option. I was beginning to feel alive for the first time in over 30 years. Now? Well, I feel like moving to France or ANY other Country that does NOT have it's head up it's posterior.....

Mike, you must be fairly sure the CPAP is the cause of your sinus infections to just walk away after all you've been through.  We had quite a long discussion about sinus infections last year.  They can be very hard to clear up requiring multiple antibiotics for long periods of time.  Perhaps a break from CPAP will allow you to see if the infections do clear up on their own.  What other options did Dr. Park suggest before the last resort of ear tubes? It sounds as though these doctors are just reading each others notes and consulting without anyone taking a fresh look at the situation. Maybe you need to see one last specialist outside of your current provider.  Can you afford to go see Dr. Park?
