I have had obstructive sleep apena for 7 years & been using several CPAP machines during this time. Sleep apena 7 years ago was not really recognized by the medical insurance companies as "disorder" or even "illness", it made it tough to get coverage for a sleep study let along CPAP supplies. I am hoping with Shaq's fame it will help shed more light and life to sleep apena and the fact that this is a "silent killer".
I am convinced that treatment of sleep apnea needs to go beyond CPAP and for those unable to tolerate the CPAP. There are properly fitted, ‘functual CPR type devices’, that can improve breathing, and possibility eliminate need of assisting devices.

The function of the device is to simulate jaw positioning as would be performed in Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and to improve breathing by corrective means.
The additional features are:
1. Stops snoring when properly adjusted
2. Improve nasal breathing (a gain of 18-20% 02 plus the stimulation of nitric oxide beneficial for controlling blood pressure)
3. Should be worn for two or three hours per day plus during sleep when unable to tolerate the CPAP
Worn for two or three hours per day as active treatment
for those who sleep with the CPAP
4. Patient is encourage to talk with the appliance in the
mouth
There is however a major constraint. The treatment site is close to Boston MA. There are approximately 5-6 initial visits for examination, diagnostics, consultation, delivery of appliance and three adjustments appointments.
