How often to replace masks, etc.?
I use nasal pillows, and on my instruction sheet from the DME, it recommends that they be replaced twice a month?!! Isn't that a little excessive? I Just started with CPAP in March 2011, and the nasal pillows seem to be working just fine a month later. I'd like to hear from nasal pillow users, how often they buy new ones. Thanks in advance!

i replace mine a lot less often, truth be told. in fact, this reminds me that i need to get my butt in gear and replace the one i've been using for several months now.
the idea is that you want to replace these things regularly because the material degrades and gets dirtier over time from contact with the dirt and oil and other bacteria from your face. i'm sure it's ideal to replace them bi-weekly, but i don't do it. something to aspire to i suppose.

And understand, the recommendation pertains to just the pillows cushions, not the entire mask. Many ARE finding that the newer nasal pillows cushions w/the newer, thinner material DO need to be replaced fairly often, more often than the original nasal pillows material. The problem appears to be that the thinner material ages more quickly and tends to "collapse" thereby allowing more and more leaks.

My Respironics Fit Life Total Face Mask is all one piece- there are no cushions to replace so I replace it every three months as insurance allows. I find that the seal is better with the new mask.
When I used the quattro I tried to change the cushion every month. I admire those more thrifty than I, but this way I always have a fairly serviceable spare and a mask in tip top condition. I am not so particular about the hoses and use them until they are worn out.

As Mary just stated, and I agree it seems that the seal becomes poor as the cushion ages and breaks down. I don't replace mine (a nasal mask) every month as the DME and insurance allows. I have a large yearly out of pocket, but I also have found that they last up to three months sometimes.

Thanks for your input, everyone. So far, after a month, the nasal pillows are doing ok. I clean them daily and I'm keeping up with all of the maintenance.
