went yesterday and picked up my cpap machine and was showed how to set it up and did so last night. was simple to set up, used it for 1 1/2 hours to get used to it per my tech and will increase the time every night , the pressure was on preset on 10 . felt overwhelmed to start with.

took it off before i went to sleep, did not sleep at all the night before so was deperate for a nights sleep, had alot of problems falling asleep with it on, really tried

now for my question, woke up this morning after using the cpap for 1 1/2 hours with a bad cramp in the calf of my right leg, which i never have, would the use of the cpap be the cause ? has anyone else ever had a cramp due to the use of the cpap ? is this normal, my tech said he would call me today to see how i did last night, am going to discuss this with him. did not see anything about this on the website

Hi Ernestine, It is a process getting  accustomed to pressure ,mask, sound. What machine are you using? Did they set up a ramp time? (This brings up the pressure over a period of time) You may benifit from putting your machine on while just sitting in your recliner listening to some quiet music or reading .Time in will help you get acclimated ,then you can reduce the ramp time and sleep all night . Good Sleep,Chris

yes he set up the ramp time , the cpap machine i am using is a icon CPAP E0601  if that makes sense, with a Mirage Quattro full mask , it is very quite

i did eat a banana tonight with hopes the potassium from the banana will keep me from getting cramps.

thanks for the suggestions

Is that machine a Novo, Premo, or Auto? I don't see anything that gives that model number. Hopefully not a Novo as that would mean no efficacy data.

BTW - magnesium helps with cramps and is good for the heart. USRDA = 400 mg.

Suggestion:  update your profile with your equipment details when you have time.  I'll be interested to hear how you like this machine. Good luck getting it all working well for you.

really do not know except the number on the prescripton is CPAO-E0601 ICON 500-750-1850 , i asked him if it did have a data card and it does, he said with my insurance i had to use it at least 4 1/2 hours a night for them to keep paying for it and i am not off to a good start, got to take it back, think i broke it last night, tried to hook the hose up to the machine in the dark since the light bulb blew out on the lamp on my night stand and found out that was a mistake , the connector that hooks the hose up to the machine will no longer hook on to the machine so i am going to call alittle later this morning and take it back up to the sleep lab and get the tech to look at it and see what he can do. i think i am going to like it but i will have to work up to it slowly, do not take changes very well but am going to really try.

thanks and will keep you posted

it is the premo and i thinki fixed it. thought i had broke it but after really looking at it i got back on and it seems to be working ok, just turned it on long enough to see if the air was coming  into the mask and it is, had already taken the water out of the humidifier so did not want to run it long without the water in it.

Hi Ernestine,

Thanks for the info.  Keep in mind that a data card can be for "compliance" data only, and not "efficacy" data.  It is the efficacy data that will tell you how well your therapy is working.  The compliance data is for Medicare to verify you are actually using your equipment for them to justify paying for it.  The Novo has only the compliance data card while the Premo model has the efficacy data card.  Don't feel pressured by the compliance requirement with the insurance.  You're doing this for your health and you want it to work for You! This is a big change, so be patient with yourself.  It can take some getting used to, and you have some good resources for help.

One thing I like about the Premo model is that it uses a regular USB port for data transfer.  This is better than needing to use a special card reader to transfer data.  Sounds like your DME has the software to read the data for you.  Plan to ask the DME for your own copy of your data when they do that so you have that in your own records in case you consult different doctors later.

i think if i do not use it for at least 4 hours but i remember him saying i had so many days to start complying before they stop paying for it , yes it is a very big change and i do not ajust to change well at all but after i do adjust i do normally run with whateveer i am faced with. i did want a cpap machine that would show how well i was doing with the cpap not just if i was using it but yes i am doing it for my health , not to try to get something out of medicare which by the way i am not very happy with but that discussion is for another day and another time.

i do have very good resources with this website and am learning alot from you guys and thanks so much for your support and patience.  am starting taking a magnism tablet for the cramps as well .

Cramps in your calf or sometimes I get them in my foot instep are lack of MAGNESIUM. You need to take Calcium-MAGNESIUM/ or Cal-Mag-Zinc ( we take). I highly doubt it's the CPAP.

the reason i thought it was the cpap , i had never had cramps in my leg before and it was the first time i used the cpap so i thought it must be connected, but come to think of it i did not have cramps the night i went for my 2nd sleep study with cpap.

thanks for the cal-mag-zinc, will make a note of this and pick some up .

got another question for all of you, this has been my 3rd night with using cpap , still not been able to sleep with it on, kept it on last night until 2:30 am and still was not able to fall asleep with it on and took it off and finally went to sleep around 3 am. of course i do have problems with my sleep so don't think it is the cpap but how long should it take before i am able to fall asleep with the cpap. the mask fits great and the machine is very quite so no problems there. am getting used to it being on my face.

thanks all

I used to get "Charlie Horses" all the time. Ever had a cramp in your instep while driving? I had one in the dentist's chair, oh, that's fun. In 2 weeks taking cal-mag-zinc, see if they're gone. They make caplets, if the size tablets are a problem (they're large) . I see a connection with alcohol and lack of magnesium/calcium absorption too. You can take 2-3 a day, we do, although you can get too much zinc I think so check that dosage.

You've got to give the CPAP at least 30 days. It's ok to take it off at night, use it as much as you can, practice during the day on weekends (lock out the kids :~)

It's better to sleep the rest of the night without it then to not sleep at all. Keep adjusting it, I see you have to "comply" to get insurance, I don't want Big Brother to that extent but topic for another day. All I know it's 30, maybe 60 days to where you don't even know CPAP is on your face. Nasal pillow size is important too.
