Does anyone have insomnia besides sleep apnea?  If so, how are you handling it?

Donna M, I use a Marpac SleepMate. Amazon carries it. They have one for $40 And one for $50. Couldn't say what the difference is.

It is a white noise machine. It is not like those other machines that play sounds of birds, the ocean, etc. It just makes the same white noise (rushing air). Some people use a fan for the same effect.

Re: Sound Machine

Here is the best, most durable machine on the market - http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-SleepMate-980A-Electro-Mechanical-Cond...   If you get one make sure to get the two speed model.

For myself I use a little plastic 8-inch two-speed desk fan (under $10).

The SleepMate is good for traveling but most of the places I stay have an HVAC unit in the room and you can use the unit's fan as a white noise. So I don't take the SleepMate.

Sorry Mary, I must have hit enter just after you replied. At least we are in agreement in our answers. :)

I use the SleepMate Mary Callahan and Rooster suggested, except I find the cycling off and on of the HVAC units in hotel/motel rooms bothers me so I take the SleepMate with me when I am driving. Too heavy to pack in a suitcase.

We have friends that use a fan like Rooster does, but I like the SleepMate's adjustments for the different speeds. The loudest noise at low speed works fine for me.

The book I reccommended above is also at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/More-Sleepless-Nights-Peter-Hauri/dp/04711490...

A medical issue may be an issue. I had a low a B-12 and D. Since blood test they have increased and have recovered additional sleep. For me this worked. Also emotional issues also contributed to lack of sleep.  The only issue for me now is the sleep apnea. But is was a double pain in the ass with the insomnia and the apnea!
I wish that would have been my case. I have had good levels for years now, but raising it had no impact on my sleep.

Ernestine, CPAP is not always a rocky ride.  Sometimes it works well from the very beginning.
hope that will be the case with me , everything goes smooth from the beginning, only know i have to do something, know how serious this can be so i am going in with a open mind and will give it a good try

Sorry to disagree, but from all I've read here, it seems CPAP works best right from the beginning for people with severe sleep apnea without insomnia.

For all those with insomnia or mild apnea, the CPAP does seem to present with a lot of problems from the get go. It is unfortunate, but seems to be the case in this guide.

i have talked to people that says they would have to have another one if something happened to theirs so i hope that is how i will be. am going to in with a opened mind and give the best try i possibly can, don't feel like i really have a choice. have to see this through.

You are right Ernestine. That is all we can do -- give it our best shot. After all it is for our health.
