Cleaning the water chamber shouldn't be so hard, should it?

I haven't been using the CPAP for very long, and decided today was the day to disassemble and clean the water chamber.  I can't for the life of me get the top off--I remember the guy at the medical supply place telling me it was hard to do, and I remember that there was something to squeeze or pinch to release the top...but I've been working on it for about 30 minutes now and I'm not any closer to having it open.  If all else fails, I'll try to get back to the medical supply place this next week, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to see if anyone had any suggestions!  The machine is a REMstar Auto A-Flex, and the user manual doesn't mention the humidifier at all.  Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks in advance!!

*sigh* Respironics and their &^%$ Remstar name. They use it on all their models and in all their series almost since time began. It tells us NOTHING except that its made by Respironics (now Philips Respironics = PR).

From your description of what your local DME provider told you about opening the humidifier tank my guess is that you have a PR SystemOne PAP of one model or another: Plus, Pro, Auto, etc.

Take the tank out of the humidifier. Set it on the counter. There is a hole in the center of the top. Stick your finger in the hole. One end of the hole has a circle imprinted in the plastic, the other does not. There is a vertical strip of plastic on the end of the hole w/o the circle. Put your finger in the hole and press that vertical strip of plastic whilst pulling the top up. You should feel some "give" and the top come off.

I don't know how easy it would be to rinse given all the "baffles" or whatever you want to call them in this needlessly complicated humidifier tank but for nice simple, normal, humidifier tanks you can just fill them w/hot water and drop in a PoliDent Denture Cleansing tablet, let the tablet dissolve and the tank soak, then empty, rinse and its nice and fresh and clean and ready to use again.

The Respironics M Series had a very poorly designed humidifier and I think they've over-reacted to that problem in designing this complicated S1 humidiifer tank.

But then, Resmed had a problem w/the early S8s' power connection and they appear to have over-reacted to that by going w/the *&^% power brick w/their S9 Series.

YESSSSSS!  And the top is off.  Your instructions were perfect and my water chamber is clean--thank you SO much for your help!  Shouldn't be quite so challenging next time.  :)
