This may have been brought up before, but I don't get on here very often. Because I have been fighting an upper respiratory virus for several months, I can't lay flat without bringing on a coughing fit. Therefore, I have been sleeping in my husband's oversized recliner. I haven't used my CPAP since I started this, but I haven't seemed to need it either. My husband says he's never seen me sleep so soundly, and I wake up feeling better than I ever have before! Could it be that my head is reclined enough to keep the OSA from being an issue?

It is rumored that some blood pressure meds might cause a chronic cough or other respiratory issues. Could be a bad rumor though as I have not found anything that gave it any merit. Search cough and blood pressure medication.
Laurie, I know this is a late reply and hopefully you have your question answered by now. Why don't you try sleeping in the recliner with your CPAP on and then read the machine data to check your AI and AHI. If they are considerabley better perhaps a recliner is the answer for you I would be hesitant to assume the recliner position fixed my sleep apnea, but if you had proof, well that would be great.

i have not been diagonsed with sleep apnea yet but i do sleep better in a recliner then i do in a bed. i cannot sleep in a bed anymore. don't know if i need to go for sleep study or not. my doctor will not give me anything to help me sleep but has snot suggested i go for one. would sleeping in a recliner help with this disease, although i had a brother that had this disease i know nothing about it. i have woke up feeling like i had been trying to get my breath , should i get a sleep study done, do they do those at your home or do youi have to go to the clinic to have it done. i cannot sleep laying in a bed so sleeping in a bed would be out of the question. just do not get sleepy and i have arthiritis of the knee so laying down for a long period of time would not be possible.
would you please give me the systems of sleep apnea as well as treatments
thanks alot
Ernestine, why don't you detail your symptoms for us? Curtesy of Web MD the symptoms of sleep apnea are
"Common sleep apnea symptoms include:
Waking up with a very sore and/or dry throat
Loud snoring
Occasionally waking up with a choking or gasping sensation
Sleepiness or lack of energy during the day
Sleepiness while driving
Morning headaches
Restless sleep
Forgetfulness, mood changes, and a decreased interest in sex
Recurrent awakenings or insomnia"

Treatments include CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), Dental Appliances, and surgery. Some sleep labs keep recliners and will let you sleep in one for your study, some will not.
I would start with my PCP and a list of symptoms and hopefully, if a sleep study is indicated they will order one.
Other things that help with insomnia are tylenol or advil PM, something with benadryl in the mix, or just plain benadryl (diphenhydramine Hcl). There are a number of over the counter remedies that can help.Unisom is one. Also, be sure not to go to bed when you're not sleepy. Enough activity during the day to make you tired at night can help.
The chronic pain from the arthritis may be keeping you from sleeping, are you taking any meds for this?

Good luck, I'm sure other members will have more ideas. Ernestine Webster said:

i do wake up with a dry mouth and my mouth is so wide open it hurts and at times i wake up with a headache , no matter how little sleep i get during the night , during the day i do not get sleepy that has me conerned , there had been some nights i did not sleep at all and did not get sleepy during the day as odd as that sounds, i am a diabetic as well as being treated for high blood pressure so i have to be careful what i take over the counter. i have talked to my doctor about my sleep problems and she will not give me anything as far as sleep aids go , people with this problem does not understand , my husband told me the other day if i was sleepy i could just go lay down and go to sleep, believe me i can't , wish i could. he just goes takes a nap anytime he wants to but i cannot as hard as i try and it is so very frustrating to go thru this. i can understand how and why michical jackson got to the place he had got to.my daughter told me if i would try i could go to sleep but that is not so. ia m finding before i try to go to sleep is helping so far so i keep a book close by my recliner.
thanks for your suggestions and am starting to do some research on the internet on sleep apnea.
