since when did sleep apnea treatment include smoking a joint? methinks either this reporter isn't clear on what sleep apnea is, or I'm on the wrong treatment!

"There is no sense of euphoria among the men, each weary from grinding pain. Their maladies include cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, neck, back and spinal problems, nerve disorders, depression and sleep apnea, for which they take a cabinet full of prescription painkillers and other medications. Marijuana provides only temporary relief. For them, marijuana is not the ticket to a better life, but to a temporarily less difficult one."

Some people in the media or in "scientific research" will do anything to push this drug.
I personally think that if any of you out there are thinking of taking some bad advice regarding the treatment of your sleep related breathing problems, this is definately the way to go. LOL
I thought I have heard everything for treating SA but this one takes the cake, The key to this article with the following: "cabinet full of prescription painkillers and other medications" . This is a good reason they have Sleep Apnea (most likely Central Sleep Apnea due to the med's) I would think that the use of marijuana would affect their Sleep Apnea in a bad way, But I am not going to try and find out. I don't need the overhead problems.
I did some research on the subject. I guess it does help with some anxiety, and insomnia issues. It is even mentioned in one of the online courses we have to take in order to prepare for the boards. I could not find any studies relating to sleep apnea,or the tratment of, in any of the educational sites though. I gess they could use hemp to make head gear. lol. I won't be telling any of my pts about this treatment any time soon.
taking this seriously for a moment, i would think that it could complement some other treatment, like CPAP, as a measure to counter anxiety, especially associated with acclimating oneself to CPAP. But, certainly as a stand alone therapy, it would be disasterous. Wouldn't that relax the muscles in your body, making obstructions more likely to occur? Again, and just for the record, I think the suggestion that people smoke up to treat sleep apnea is preposterous.

i have sleep apnea and marijuana does help me sleep and help me stay alseep without it i toss and turn and when i do fall asleep it is only for a short while and then i wake up alot of my problems are due to respiratory troubles and having trouble breathing when i sleep so before you try to say that it doesn't help you might want to consult someone who uses this as a treatment
I actually have a text book that discusses the different drugs and their effects on sleep. Marijuana is one of them discussed. I don't remember the exact facts, but I will look it up and post when I get to work tonight. From what i have learned no matter what the drug is it will have a negative and positve effect on sleep. Ie: increased REM=decreased SWS, Increased sleep latency=decreased REM latency so on and so on. Even stimulants will carry a heavy sleep debt as they wear off.
It would appear to me over the long haul, smoking anything would only increase any respiratory troubles and trouble breathing. Is it anxiety that makes it hard for you to breathe Ian?
Ok I found it. Maurijuana(THC) increases sleep latency, but decreases REM. it has also been known to increase apneas in some pts. The REM supression by itself would make a person that uses feel more tired. Marijuana is also as harmful to the liver as alcohol over an extended period. This damage is not caused by the marijuana, but by the impurities that it may contain. ie bacteria or fungus.
