In another thread, I saw some references to alternative power sources in the event of a power outage. There are numerous ways to achieve a back up power source, but you need to use some caution.

The best way is to have your house wired for use with a generator. While expensive, if still provides you with some of the creature comforts until the power is restored.

If your machine has the capability of 12v DC voltage (i.e. standard auto 12v), make sure you have the proper 12v power cord. As David said in another thread, "Be certain you have the correct DC power cables some machines require an inline power filter also correct polarity is a must. They are NOT forgiving of improper hook up."

I have a friend who devised a method to connect a voltage inverter to his car battery and then runs an extension cord (like the heavy duty orange ones) into his bed room. Works great for him. You can do the same thing with a 12v auto battery in a battery box equipped with a trickle charger, so it is always fully charged. Just add the voltage inverter and you now have a 110v AC power source in which to power your *PAP.

There are many ways to be prepared. Share your methods and help your fellow hose heads.

thanks, Dan. I bought something called the Power Alert alarm that sounds an alarm in the event of a power outage.
We have a power inverter and a marine battery. We keep a trickle charger hooked to the marine battery all the time. If there is a power outage (occasionally happens where we live), the CPAP (soon to be VPAP) is plugged into the inverter, and the cables go from inverter to marine battery.

I've been on CPAP 4 years, and in that time had to use the backup system twice. The electricity to the house
(and our side of the street and the rest of the grid area we are on) was out 4 hours one time and 5 or 6 the
other time, and the backup system worked fine.

The marine battery is in an acid-proof case.
The Power Alert alarm is exactly what I need. Where can I buy it? Thank you. -Vicki

I have a PowerSource 400. It only beeps once when power goes off or on (or, allegedly, when it is nearly running out, which I haven't experienced yet).

The single beep is loud enough to wake me up when it happens.

It keeps my CPAP running during an outage, so there's no interruption. And, I have twice used it during extended outages (4+ hours).

There have been numerous outages during the night too...more this summer than I have ever recalled.

Currently my humidifier isn't connected to it, even though manual says and other users say its safe to use on inverter....but I've only been using it in passive mode most nights.

The Dreamer.
