Hi Melodie. I don't know about that specific one. But I do know that losing that much weight, that quickly, isn't good for your body. And all my experiences with lose weight fast diets and gimmicks have never worked. I'm afraid it took me this long to gain the weight, it's going to take me some time to lose it.

Still, I did lose 20+ lbs so far on weight watchers in 3 months. (technically even that is 'too fast' though) It's taking longer, but still, it's heading in the right direction at least!

I'm always leery of clicking on any weightloss ads or spam emails. There are sooo many viruses and stuff out there. It's too dangerous to give in to curiosity in my opinion.

congrats on your weight loss amott1973 thats great. i have been on just over a month now, but its going slow.as i am having a hard time getting motivated. only lost 2 so far. but trying to get back on track. but i am feeling better since on cpap. and that means alot .....
  • amott1973

Thanks Teresa. It's been really hard the last 2 weeks. My birthday really thru me off (we had a cake and I blew it in more ways than one!) but I'm really trying to get back on track. I've gained about 7 pounds in two weeks though and that makes me so mad! I was within 2 pounds of my 10% before I did that. It's like I'm sabotaging myself. Grr. Hopefully this weekend will show a nice loss though. I'm trying hard to make better choices!
  • Smitty

I can't wait to learn and lose with all of you. I started eating less and working out more a couple week ago and already lost 10 lbs! I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2007 but never did treatment. I gained 30 lbs since that year. I was already 40 lbs overweight at that time so now I'm in really deep trouble. HELP!
  • teresa g sullivan

congrats on your lost smitty, i am having a hard time too, just stayin on program ww. i do good till weekends..now i start my vacation tomorrow.hope i can keep on ww program and not gain .. i lost 2 this week, so hopefully can do it again... best wishes amott. im thinking of you and know what you mean.. it is hard , but just because you got off track, doesnt mean you cant get back on... lets do it.... ok....good luck to you all
  • amott1973

Thanks Teresa. I lost 3.2lbs last week! Finally back on track. A big thing for me is to have a lot of good choice foods in the house! AND keep my motherinlaw from bringing in a bunch of sugary crap. She's a Type2 diabetic (as is my husband) and she uses my 3 year old as an excuse to bring a bunch of donuts, cookies, etc into the house when she's here. I made her pack up the cinnamon buns, brownies, cookies and coffee cake she bought and take it home with her today. She just doesn't get it! No one in this house needs that kind of crap, and certainly not in those amounts!
  • Linda Brown

Thanks for the heads up on the Pad a Cheeks. Mine came in the mail yesterday and they really feel great. No marks on my face this this morning either. One more hurdle I'm over. Now if I could just get rid of my cane after the hip replacement. It was June 4 and I'm still working with PT, but can't seem to get cane-free. I have lost 9 lbs since surgery though.
  • Smitty

Thanks Teresa for your congrats. I believe that during a vacation it is normal to say that you can eat what you want but as we both know, we're only fooling no one when we say that but most of all we know better. There are choices and we have to learn the right choices. At least with ww you can save your points so you don't have to miss out on everything! Good luck and have a great time. Remember, it doesn't have to be about food all the time.
  • amott1973

Keep trying Linda! I just did my first PT session after a really bad flare up of hip bursitis hit me in late July. I'm trying to do the exercises morning and night. Hopefully it'll help. I don't want that pain ever again! I couldn't walk at all for four days without extreme pain. Just one more of my many reasons to keep losing weight!
  • BeeAsleep

Well, I made an appointment with a nutritionist. My doc said that the menopause thingie has kicked in full force slowing down my metabolism. I am soooooo tired of feeling this way. I am excited to get some one-on-one time with someone who knows how to adjust my calories to compensate for the wonderful aging process. It is no mystery, calories in calories out. We will see what happens in the months to come. I just broke my leg 3 weeks ago, so all my great morning exercising went into the trash can. I guess I get to start over again. But I am hanging in there!
  • Mike

My weight seems to be skyrocketing. I'm concerned that it might have something to do with my pre-diabetes. I've gained about 10 pounds in the last year. also, my wife is pregnant, and wondering whether that has some effect on what I'm eating.
  • Linda Brown

I'm doing PT 3 days a week after the hip replacement. I'm now cane free. Walked with my dog over a mile today, so I'm hopeful I can start getting the weight off. I love my Pad-a-cheek. Now just today I ordered a CPAP pillow. Hope that helps with the side sleeping, which I prefer.
  • RockRpsgt

Mike, i gained 15 lbs while my wife was pregnant with Zoey.
  • BeeAsleep

  • Mike

Rock, did you ever take off your "pregnancy weight"?
  • RockRpsgt

I am working on it now Mike. I hit 267 lbs before I saw the error of my ways. I am down to 258 lbs. My goal is is 240. that would be a loss of 10%. I play volleyball, and rollerblade as much as possible. No real workout routine as of yet. i am working on turning one of my garage bays into an exercise area.
  • Leslie Scott

Hi all, I'm Leslie. Used cpap for 7 years. Went on in 2002. Through the process of figuring out I had multiple sleep disorders, I was able to lose 60 lbs (I was as high as 265) and as of January my cpap was discontinued. (still over 200, but down to 205).

Granted, I have always been a shallow breather even when I was thin, so I have to use oxygen when I am asleep now instead of the cpap. There are times I wish I was back on the cpap... But the good part is, if I leave town, unless I am going Up, I don't have to take my oxygen with me. (only on it because of our altitude). In the mean time, I work in a sleep lab and keep teasing my boss we need to put up before and after pictures.

I have lost 60 lbs, but still have a ways to go. Need at least another 50. Looking forward to the support here.
  • BeeAsleep

Well, I finally lost some weight. 10 pounds so far in less than a month. I am going to a certified nutritionist and wearing the GoWearFit band which is great for tracking exercise. Hope to reach my goal by March. Kind of like eating food that doesn't make me sick, imagine that!
  • amott1973

Well I lost 40 lbs on weightwatchers between Mothers day and last weekend. And then had to quit... because I'm pregnant! We're so excited! Losing the weight surely helped us to get pregnant finally (along with a lot of fertility meds). I do have to stop the WW, but I'm still tracking what I eat and trying to make good choices. It won't do me any good to regain all the 40 lbs I just lost!
  • BeeAsleep

    congrats Ammott1973!
  • amott1973

Thanks! We're really excited. Now if I can just not gain 40lbs with this pregnancy I'll be doing well!
  • susan mccord

Amott1973--hey, congratulations on your upcoming little miracle!! When's your due date?
I think you may be having our first SleepGuide baby if Mike and Melinda don't beat you to it!!

I'm very happy for you--after all that work to get pregnant, you must be delighted beyond words.....

    Susan McCord :-)
  • amott1973

Looks like June sometime will be the due date. I'll know something more definitive after our ultrasound Tuesday. I'm just wondering if it's one or two in there!
  • amott1973

It's a good thing I just lost 40 pounds on WW, because I found out Tuesday that I'm pregnant with TWINS! I am supposed to gain between 35-45 pounds with them (to be healthy). I'll be right back on that WW horse when they're born though. And all the healthy eating stuff I've learned will actually come in handy for the pregnancy too. We're so excited! http://everythingangela.blogspot.com/2009/10/and-what-do-you-see.html
  • sleepycarol

amott -- That is terrific news!!

Please keep us posted on your progress with the babies. We are blessed on this form when it comes to babies. I had three grandbabies this summer!!

As far as my weight loss goes, I have gained part of what I had lost back. I know part of it is stress. I have a new boss at work and she micro-manages our department. I have worked for the same district for 14 years and have always been left alone pretty much. My paper work has always passed our state reviews without any problems. Now things have become topsy-turvy and it is driving me crazy as she has misplaced files, sent paperwork to the wrong parents, passed deadlines due to micromanaging as she has to okay all paperwork and since she is only in the building one day a week it is tough. Oh well enough whining.

    Again congratulations to amott!!
  • Corrine Greenhalgh

Hi all! Congratsvon the baby! That's always exciting news! I've been on cpap for a few months so I'm a newb. I love my machine (that's what I call it). I'm also going for the lap band in six weeks or so. I am hoping that I can eventually get off of all of my meds, but I am never getting rid of my machine! I have become so attached to it! Haha.
  • amott1973

Welcome Corrine! I'm so glad you've found cpap working for you. The lapband sounds exciting. I've known people who have had good success with it. I love my machine too. It's amazing the difference!

Thanks sleepycarol! Stress is a huge issue for me too. Especially when I'm operating under deadlines. too tempting to snack away. Good luck getting back to losing!
  • Melodie

    Carol,
Since we last spoke, I have been on alot of steroids (for various health reasons) and have put on quite a bit of unwanted weight. My family doc told me the best way to start losing weight is to STOP DIETING. She said to just eat what I normally like to eat, but to cut my portions in half, I can even have dessert - but very little. This way you don't feel like you're being deprived of foods you enjoy - but you are cutting way back on the "portions". I am finding this to be very helpful to me. She (the doc) also said that I should add some type of exercise to my daily regimen, such as simply walking. Just this week I have been getting serious about taking the advice of my family physician and I can already feel a difference in the way that I feel and am sleeping better too.

I had lapband surgery in May 2005, and had a horrible experience with it. Had the physicians done the appropriate lab work necessary, they would have found that I have systemic lupus, along with many other medical issues and they would NOT have performed the surgery that literally almost killed me. I did lose about 100 lbs with the lapband, but I was constantly vomiting, so much so that it destroyed the enamel off the backs of my teeth - and now I am having problems with my teeth. They eventually had to open the band wide open so that I could even eat. I cannot even have it removed unless it's a matter of life or death due to my many other health issues. I would NOT suggest that anyone undergo lapband or any other kind of bariatric surgery - the risks are NOT worth it. I am living proof of what can happen when lapband goes totally wrong.
Let me know if there is anything else that I can contribute in this particular discussion.

    Thanks,
    Melodie (Mel)
  • susan mccord

Hi Melodie--gotta tell you that what you and your MD have planned out worked like a charm for me. I've lost a ton of weight doing exactly that. It doesn't come off fast like some people want it to, but you'll have good results if you keep after it. The combination of smaller portions (and healthier eating in general) AND walking is the trick. At least it was for me. Congratulations! I agree with your MD--you don't have to starve yourself or miss out on things you love. Sounds like you're on the road, literally AND figuratively!

I'm so sorry to hear about your lapband going so badly. People seem to misunderstand that stomach re-sizing is a serious surgery. There's so much hype about it, that folks take for granted they'll have it and the #s will drop off. Not so, even with a successful surgery.

Sure sounds to me like they didn't do even preliminary blood testing, etc., or at least not adequately, to rule out other medical problems. But you sound like a strong woman who's looking for the best way to stay healthy. I applaud you for that!

Keep up the good work. And I warn you, walking can get addictive! I love it and it DOES change the way I feel, both physically and emotionally.

In reference to a previous posting on July 8, 2009: "from Sleep Apnea Ed: 'I am taking a few days away from the office and I have with me a copy of Mark Bittman's new book - Food Matters A guide to Conscious Eating - which is part ecological/dietary manifesto and part recipe book.

My inspiration for reading the book is the fact that Mr. Bittman was formerly a sleep apnea sufferer, along with having high cholesterol and being pre-diabetic...."

I found this interesting as I enjoy another book by Mark Bittman, "The Minimalist Cooks at Home". It is a nice small cook book giving a simple and flexible way to cook that makes it easy to work with what you personally like, try new things, and use what you have on hand, or try something that may be entirely new to you. As many have learned, portion size is always a consideration.

I also find that vegetarian cookbooks are good sources for vegetable based recipes, even if you still eat meat, the vegetarians have lots of ways to make such food interesting and delicious, since they rely on that type of cuisine for everything.

I have seen reference to sleep apnea and any type of chronic sleep deprivation causing brain and hormone changes that will trigger people to eat too much and especially crave carbohydrates. In my humble opinion, you would do well to consult a doctor about your sleeping and eating problems as they may be related, and treating the sleep issues could help with the eating issues. Your profile noted that you are not using any treatment for sleep apnea, so have you been diagnosed? That would be a first step.
  • susan mccord

RL--hey, both these books sound like they might be REALLY good reference books for our SleepGuide Book Club! If you haven't checked out the Book Club Group, I'd encourage you to not only visit it, but also to consider adding both these books so members can easily locate them by title, author, and content. I've gotten a couple of useable ideas just from reading your post. The books both sound great and exactly what we'd like to have In The SG Book Club Group!!!!

Check out the format and see what you think!

    Susan McCord :-)
  • RL

O.K., so I will go ahead and start a thread with a few cook books and other health related books I like, with a short review for each. Look for this thread in the Sleep Apnea Book Club Group. If you want to add your own favorite cook books, please add your opinion or experience using the book.
  • susan mccord

Go for it! It'll be interesting to see if people find them helpful!

My wife and I are into the low carb thing. She made a great "Unpotato salad" tonight, it was really great. She made it with cauliflower just blanched, after it cooled she added red onion, 1/4 cup of ,apple cider vinegar, mayo and seasoned to taste. It tastes great and you don't feel weighed down from potatoes.

I have made it no secret that I have gone Vegan. No I am not a radical Vegan. My family still eats beef, fish, and dairy. This was a choice for health for me. My cholesterol has dropped 100 points and my weight continues to go down. Yes I get plenty of Protein in my diet.
The low carb cauliflower dish reported below is a fantastic one. I have it about 2 times a week. Instead of mayo I use one tsp of molasses it gives it that buttery flavor mixed in also is a few tablespoons of rice or soy milk. Just depends on what I want to use that day.
Vegan by far is not for everyone but the results have been amazing.
  • D. W. Conn

PS I do run mine through a food processor and leave enough texture to make it interesting.
  • Richard Morgan

There are so many different ways you can fix something like that. I forgot to mention boiled eggs. We aren't vegans by a long shot, but we enjoy many vegetable dishes. My wife has a talent for creating great salads, which has helped me make healthier choices without feeling like I am missing out.
  • Richard Morgan

BTW, Glad someone has picked up this thread again.
  • D. W. Conn

This is a great thread. and I may come asking for helpful hints. Ihave have even come up with a chicken fried steak mashed potatoes gravy with very little fat and it curbs my craving for beef.
  • Richard Morgan

How about posting it. It's got me curious!
  • D. W. Conn

I will have to start a thread seems we have a chracter limit

I got off the Vegan bandwagon for a couple of weeks. The results are staggering. There has been a 9 pound weight gain and I feel awful.
The energy that was gained during the Vegan change has been lost. This is enough for me to go back and remain vegan or at least Vegan-Vegetarian.
  • sleepycarol

Well here I am back to needing to do something about my weight gain. I have gained back all that I lost previously. :(. Work was sooooo stressful that my ulcers started acting up again, along with my nerves being totally fried. I finally went and asked the doc for something for my nerves and she was stunned as I have never been one that needed that sort of thing. I ended up filling the script -- but never took them -- I think they served as a security blanket for me.

Work is still stressful and although we are out on summer break I ended up having to change rooms and what a mess!! I have worked for over a week getting things in order and still am only partially done!! Will be glad when it is all done and put away!!

I am needing to go back and start from square one. My problem lately is that I have zero energy. Taking the trash out to the curb, sweeping, picking up around the house, etc. tires me out. I am thinking along the lines I probably need a good physical to rule out any type of problems and start eating more sensibly. I have gotten into the habit of eating one meal a day. I tell myself that by only eating a meal once a day is cutting out unnecessary calories and am having trouble getting over this hump. I think in my mind that I am trying to justify my snacking by thinking that since I "am saving calories" it is okay to snack.

I am a sugar addict if there is such a thing. I crave the sweets like a junkie looking for their next fix.

Any good ways of breaking the sugar habit?
  • D. W. Conn

Sleepcarol To help break that sugar habit try Agave nectar it has a low glycemic index and it taste great. You can use it to sweeten drinks or as a honey sub. It comes from the same plant as Tequia so oyu know its good. I tried the pink stuff-blue stuff and the worst of all steevia (so gross). Agave is not calorie free so use it only when needing a fix.
  • D. W. Conn

Here is a great trick to keep from over eating. About 30 minutes before dinner 8 to 12 oz water and a low or no sodium rice cake. You feel full already and your will power will get you through the dinner.
  • Allison Keller

AGH. I feel like a fat blob. I am literally the biggest I have ever been in my life and I have been pretty big before. I had my thyroid removed in January so I'm pretty certain that isn't helping but I've always, since grade school, had a weight problem. I don't want that surgery. To me, that really isn't even an option. I can, or could, lose weight pretty easily before thyroid surgery. I've tried it for a week or two at a time since then and don't see any results so I just give up. I wish there was a medicine or an herb that made food taste awful so I wouldn't want to eat.
