Rock,
GED (gasrtoesophageal reflux disorder) is a common complication of OSA because of the huge negative pressure generated in the thorax. When one inhales and the upper airway suddenly blocks, but the diaphragm and the chest muscles continue to pull outward, gastric contents are sucked up into the esophagus, sometimes all the way up into the throat. Dr. Park tells me he sees patients with this complication frequently. Not only is "heart burn" and the other esophageal problems an issue, but inflammation of the upper airway, throat and eustacian tubes leading to ear infections can be a problem. Successful treatment of OSA can put an end to this disorder.
