Hi,

The DME company that I work for as a therapist has started selling these things called ProVent. They are little one way valves that allow air flow in and apply a little bit of resistance on exhalation and look like a band aid that you put on your nostrils. They are supposed to create pressure on exhalation to hold the airway open.

If they do work for some patients, you still have to replace them every night.  It seems that if that works, you could use a standard CPAP mask and put a PEEP valve on it to create exhalation pressure and do the same thing.

I would like to know how these work.

Thanks,
Kevin

I've heard mixed reviews. Mostly that they're very hard to tolerate. Then again, I heard that it worked for a friend of a friend and if hard to tolerate was the standard we use CPAP would also fall into that category.

Kevin I am researching this product.

I  would like to try it to see how it fairs. I know that with nasal CPAP any pressure that can make a pt panic causes them to open mouth to breath.... I just do not know jury is still out

nice recall, j n k.  i knew i had heard that somewhere, but couldn't put my finger on the source.  Dr. Rapoport is a very reliable source indeed.

It is a 50% acceptable result, there’s an additional amount who respond but it is not good enough, and there is a clear number who do not respond at all. . . . It doesn’t work in everybody. . . . It works in some but not others. . . . Don’t get your hopes up. It’s not going to put CPAP out of business.”--David Rapoport, head of NYU Sleep Center, at presentation to Manhattan AWAKE Sleep Apnea Support Group in New York City on May 5, 2010.

Yep, they are just fancy vented band-aids, and they should be non-prescription and over the counter at drug stores. from your lips to the FDA's ears, my friend.  happy New Year!
