getting the run around

Dear Mr Williams

We have already explained to you that there is no back light on the System One machines. This is the way Philips Respironics designed it.

now say that the back light is not functional without the humidifier and for it to work you need to attach an humidifer

Dear Mr Williams,

Further to our conversation earlier, I can confirm that it is possible to set a backlight on the Cpap device without attaching a humidifier. Instructions on how to do this will be in your options manual.

If you need any other information then please feel free to send me an e-mail or give me a call and I’ll see what I can do.

Hope this helps.

repironics now say that the light does not work without the humidifer attached</quote>

I cannot speak for the PR S1 CPAPs in the UK or other countries. BUT I CAN speak for the PR S1 BPAP Auto w/Bi-Flex that I was provided w/here in the USA.
The PR S9 BPAP Auto w/Bi-Flex does NOT have a backlit LCD screen w/OR w/o the integrated humidifier attached, at least NOT those versions produced before 28 March 2010 when I received mine.
I have both the Users Manual AND the Clinicians Manual for the PR S1 BPAP Auto w/Bi-Flex and I will go back and re-read them thoroughly and IF I find different and that I have missed such reference in prior readings of them I will return and post that info here.

i think it is a design fault that they have not picked up on and are now saying there is no back light
Hi 99,

You had us scratching our heads in the office today as at first, we thought "of course, it must have a backlit display" as most machines have it and we too think it's a handy feature. We then combed through every manual we have and frankly, the wordage isn't clear. So we grabbed a couple of different PR machines and just tried it. No go. SO we checked with Respironics and the answer we got, was a lot different form the answer you initially got. So I'm sorry we became part of this confusion. I'm glad you asked it though as we now all know that there is no backlit LCD on the System One machines, unless you add a humidifier. And where's the logic in that? To change humidity levels, you want to see it on screen? Surely the dial is self-explanatory enough. But anyway, it does strike us as odd and we're sorry you were given the run-around a bit by Respironics. It sure is confusing when you get different answers from different people who are meant to know the machines inside out. I'm glad we got it right, though I would have preferred we got it wrong! Hope you like the unit despite the lack of a backlit LCD.
it is easy to blame someone not so easy to take responsibilty you have played your part perfectly and with humility which again is not easy, particularly with two conflicting authoratative answers from philips repironics who i apprieciate work very hard to supply what the consumer wants.

i hope now that philips respironics will get onto the case and do a revision for future, without the need for a humidifier to be attached flor the backlight to work as it spoils thier product and tarnish slightly thier image which otherwise is very good
thanks for being persistent enough to get to the bottom of this 99, and thanks for sharing the correspondence with us.
