I have never really thought about a battery back up for my machine but after reading your post I decided to do a bit of internet searching. There seems to be a variety of batteries on the market and I am wondering how successfully they work. If anyone has used any of them I would appreciate some input.
can it be charging while used on a cpap as i have car jump start unit i also have an inverter
Hi Mike
I want to purchase a battery for "just in case" I ever lose power. I have a Respironics REMStar Auto machine. To buy a Respironics battery in Australia is $600.00. This seems like a much cheaper alternative considering that I may never need to use it (it's really for peace of mind) and they will ship to Australia.
Do you have any insight to offer or any questions I should be asking before I pay for it?
Thanks
Susan
I wonder how they get "14 - 24 hrs" of battery life out of a 7.8 Amp Hour battery. My M Series and IntelliPAP at 11 cmh2o will
get about 8 hours from a 7.8 Amp Hour battery.
Product Description. If you are looking for a universal and portable way to power your CPAP, APAP or BiPAP then look no further! This 266 Wh Lithium-Polymer (not the older, inferior Lithium-Ion) battery pack easily powers your PAP device for more than one night.

Handy at home as a back-up during mains power failure and great for camping or travelling to places with unreliable power sources, the Super CPAP Battery Pack comes with a versatile set of accessories and a sturdy carrying bag to give you full peace of mind in those difficult situations. Because the battery has a built-in cigarette lighter socket, it can power many types of appliances such as portable DVD players that require up to 12V.

If you live in an area that is prone to mains power failure just plug both the battery and the machine into the mains and then connect the battery to the machine and leave the battery turned on. In the event that the power should fail the battery will automatically supply power to the machine.

The built-in power meter and test button allow you to monitor the battery's available power at any given moment, giving you ample opportunity to make sure it is charged enough for the night. Charging time is 5 to 8 hours depending on its level of depletion. LED lights will flash and even a built-in voice can tell you if the battery needs recharging.

Ideal for Travel
Weighing in at just over 4 pounds - 1.9Kgs (2.5Kgs with bag and accessories), this battery offers the best weight and size to power ratio we have come across. It isn't a burden to carry around when you already have to deal with your other bags and yet is big and powerful enough to run your equipment without worrying it runs out prematurely.

Offering a steady 12 Volts and max. 20 Amp current, this battery is suitable for a wide range of makes and models. Please consult the manual of your PAP device on DC power requirements and ask us about whether it will connect with your particular sleep therapy unit. Most PAP machines manufacturers offer a cigarette lighter type cord*; they will work fine with the Super CPAP Battery Pack. Others may need an additional piece we may be able to help you with.

* Respironics: DC Power Adapter (1012975) ResMed: DC-12 Converter (33942) DeVilbiss: DC Power Cord (DV51D-619) Covidien/Puritan Bennett: Cigarette Lighter Cable (M-214530-01)

CPAP machines that can't be run from a DC source via a barrel type adapter can still be run off this battery pack with an additional sine wave power inverter but this will drain the battery much quicker and may not last you an entire night.

Heated humidifier plates take up a lot of energy so in general, manufacturers advise against powering a humidifier from 12V DC. It may be possible still and in some cases an inverter may be required (though an inverter will drain power even faster). Please consult the manual of your humidifier about the option of battery power.

Expected Usage Time
As one of the most popular CPAP Battery Packs worldwide, many users have reported fantastic performance with their PAP device. Here are some of the known figures, though please note that actual usage time depends on many variables such as your exact pressure settings and so on.

◦Respironics M Series Auto between 9 and 13 cm H2O: 29 hours and 45 minutes
◦Respironics M Series Pro at 8 cm H2O: over three nights
◦Respironics REMstar Pro 2: multiple nights
◦Puritan Bennett GoodKnight 420E at 8 cm H2O: 46 hours
The battery's manufacturer estimates the pack's performance as follows:

◦CPAP Pressure: 4 cm H2O - Estimated Battery Usage Time: 25 Hours
◦CPAP Pressure: 7 cm H2O - Estimated Battery Usage Time: 18 Hours
◦CPAP Pressure: 10 cm H2O - Estimated Battery Usage Time: 14 Hours
◦CPAP Pressure: 13 cm H2O - Estimated Battery Usage Time: 12 Hours
◦CPAP Pressure: 16 cm H2O - Estimated Battery Usage Time: 10 Hours
◦CPAP Pressure: 20 cm H2O - Estimated Battery Usage Time: 9 Hours
◦BiPAP: IPAP 8 & EPAP 4 - Estimated Battery Usage Time: 25 Hours
◦BiPAP: IPAP 14 & EPAP 10 - Estimated Battery Usage Time: 16 Hours
◦BiPAP: IPAP 20 & EPAP 16 - Estimated Battery Usage Time: 11 Hours
◦BiPAP: IPAP 24 & EPAP 20 - Estimated Battery Usage Time: 7 Hours

The Super CPAP Battery Pack consists of:

◦12V Lithium Polymer Battery in sleek black
◦Battery carrying bag (also fits accessories) with removable shoulder strap
◦Charger with mains lead
◦User Manual
◦DC power cord (cigarette lighter type)
◦Universal adapters / connectors
Usage Tips
◦No "Memory Leak" - will keep its charge!
◦Does not need to be depleted entirely before recharging - charge when it suits you!
◦Best performance secured when not depleted beyond 40% - top up when you can to avoid longer charging times.
◦Ask the airline before taking it on board for use on long haul flights. You may need clearance from the special needs / medical department before being allowed to bring it into the cabin.

DC Options for Various Popular CPAPs
Consult the manual of your PAP device or contact its manufacturer to see whether you can run it directly off a 12V source or whether you require an inverter. The battery pack comes with a range of connector plugs but it's generally always better to get the official manufacturer's DC cable where possible. In short, here is what you need to power the most popular CPAP machines from this battery pack.

◦DeVilbiss SleepCube: SleepCube Cigarette Lighter DC Power Cord
◦VIASYS BreatheX Journey: Only via a >= 100 Watt DC to AC Power Inverter*
◦Probasics Zzz-PAP: Only via >= 400 Watt DC to AC Power Inverter*
◦AEIOMed Everest 2: Requires their Mobile Power Adapter
◦Fisher & Paykel SleepStyle Series: Only via 230V - 300W/500W Surge DC to AC Power Inverter*
◦GoodKnight 420 Series: A Puritan Bennett 12V DC Power Cord with Cigarette Lighter Plug
◦Sandman Intro/Info/Auto: M-214530-01 Cigarette Lighter Cable

◦Respironics REMstar CPAP/APAP: Shielded DC cord (1001956)
◦Respironics REMstar BiPAP: DC Power Adapter Kit (1012975)
◦ResMed S8 Series: Ask ResMed (0800 917 7071) for their DC-12 Converter and make sure it can plug into a cigarette lighter socket.
◦ResMed S6 & S7: Check here or ask ResMed on 0800 917 7071
* As available in High Street electrical shops such as Maplin or online. Make sure the Wattage is sufficient. Most CPAPs require at least 300 Watt.

Note that machines that don't run on 12V natively (i.e. those that require an inverter) may not last an entire night on one battery charge. Heated humidifiers will not work on battery power but often can be used cold (see humidifier manual).

The battery's charger requires 100-240VAC 50/60Hz at 1.2A so you can charge the battery in most countries world-wide.

Note that because this battery has a capacity (266 Wh) that exceeds the maximum capacity allowed for in-flight cabin use (105 Wh), airlines will not allow operation of this battery in the aircraft's cabin. You will be able to check it in and use it once arrived at your destination.

Hi Susan,

For portable applications these battery solutions are probably fine, although in this case I think the battery is a little small for my taste.... but for a backup solution for home you may as well just get an inexpensive 12v marine battery and charger and just keep it under your bed. Just plug it in once a month to top it off. It would be much cheaper then paying a premium for portability that you don't need. Plus the marine battery should last at least 5-10 times longer when the power goes out (depending on the actual amphour rating of the battery you get).

I have a marine battery at home and have used it a few times.

I ended up getting a CPAP battery pack from The Battery Geeks for a camping trip and also for a long plane flight. I was referred to them by ResMed. On my camping trip, it gave me 5 nights of power per charge. I'm also able to use this battery to power and charge my laptop and other gadgets. You can also use their CPAP battery packs as a UPS (uninterpretable power supply) which will fully protect your CPAP machine against any unexpected power outages. The Battery Geeks gave me excellent service and a superior product so naturally, I have no regrets and would highly recommend them. They also have a very inexpensive rental program. You can see and listen to more tech info on their site at http://www.batterygeek.net/cpap
