Scheduled for evaluation and possible procedure next day

Have an appointment for an evaluation and maybe the next day a Radio Frequency Temperature controlled ablation of tongue.  It (supposedly) takes several treatments.  I am not getting excited that I may not need CPAP ...but....    I would be happier if it just lets me use the CPAP without a cervical neck collar.  My neck pain is getting worse from wearing it.  I was diagnosed mile to moderate, the MD reviewed my sleep study results and felt I might be helped.  Will see what he say son the day of the veal.  It is 5 hours from where I live, hence the scheduling the next day for procedure if he deems OK.  Appointment is 10/14.  I could have had one sooner but going on vacation in 2 weeks.

I wish I'd seen this three months ago and would be the first to acknowledge that the plural of anecdote is not data, but I had this procedure a decade back and was off CPAP for a few years but it wasn't worth it.  My doctor no longer recommends it.  Wasn't as terrible as UPPP but I am a big disbeliever in surgery to relieve OSA.

This is not quite the same as the one that was done 10 years ago in a hospital OR.  It is done over 6 months each a month apart and then is repeated yearly. All done in an MD's office with no sedation etc. Just a local to the tongue. Took pain meds as ordered with last one needed 12 hours post procedure. If it allows me to be off CPAP for some length of time it is worth it to me.I had procedure #2 done on a Thursday and by Saturday was having no discomfort at all so the recovery is not bad at all.

Just thought of something…. even heart by pass surgery does not last "forever"…so if something gives relief, albeit temporary it works for me!

Hi,  How are you doing?

Somewhat more difficulty moving tongue correctly after this one.  Hoping goes away shortly.  No pain after 12 hours. Tongue has remained swollen longer than past two treatments.  MD related a story about another patient that just had treatment #5.  Her husband actually woke her up to see if she was ok.  Seems after treatment 4 all her snoring had stopped.  She was not a CPAP user. Next treatment is Feb. 4th.

4th treatment done.  Have already scheduled my last two.  Each time I am filled with anxiety and dread as I near the MD's office but once they start the numbing injections and then the actual 70 second procedure I am amazed that there really is NO pain during any part.  The doctor is still optimistic.  Said my tongue was showing "cavitation" which is what he wants. After the last treatment I wait 6 weeks and have a repeat sleep study.  It has definitely made using the CPAP easier, if nothing else. But my fingers are crossed.  He said they are still collecting data .  Some people have one every year… some may be able to go every other year.  If it worked I would have twice a year if needed.

I hope this helps you. I am so tired of using CPAP.

Oh, I know the feeling.  It does work better since the procedures.  No more chin strap.  Some nights I sleep all night through but then last night I woke up at 2:45 just feeling so claustrophobic.  Had to take my Swift Nano off for about 1 1/2 hours.  I probably sleep some ( I know… not good) Put it back on about a little after 5 and went back to sleep until 8.  I am hopeful this will help but understand it might not. Will let you know.  If all goes as planned next appointment is the beginning of March, then April.  Then 6 weeks later a repeat sleep study.  I probably won't be able to sleep without the CPAP!!! for the test.

Ginny, I admire you for making that long ride so many times.   I'm glad it's helping.

Thanks, Mary. If you are needing any parts for the WISP you can have mine for just cost ov shipping which would not be much!   Just let me know.
