I caught a chest cold 10 days ago which progressed to a head cold, then a sinus infection.  With the sinus infection my cheeks hurt and it is hard to wear my mask.  I have ended up taking it off in the middle of the night.  Finally yesterday I saw a doctor and started on antibiotics and though the pain in my sinus cavities has not resolved yet- I have only taken two pills-  I imagine I'll soon be feeling better and I'm determined to make it through the night with my mask on tonight.  I turned the humidity up as I figure the more moisture I can get into my sinuses the better.

But I tell you- when folks used to write"CPAP with a cold?"  I used to think of course.  Now I know better what they are feeling and talking about and going through.  I am fortunate that I have not experienced this since my diagnosis in March of 2008.

I have not had a cold since starting on CPAP two years ago.  The thought of a cold is horrifying now!   And now, it's the flu season.  So I have been on somewhat of "House Arrest" avoiding people/crowds as much as I can.  Feel better soon.

I too haven't had a bad cold since starting CPAP, perhaps we don't get as many as other because our immune system maybe better. I do find I get a dribbly nose more often than before and aways get an itchy nose when I put my mask on. I try scratching it before I put my mask on but still get it.

Mary Z, you've got a point

It is said that nose breathing can kill 85% of bacteria by screening of nasal canal and chambers due to humility(=moisture) with saliva and heat up by temperature by brain.

In terms of cold by bacteria, CPAP does not influence the cold directly, but main cause must be mouth breathing that can't avoid bacteria pass direct into mouth, throat and body, so nose breathing is important.

Not many people know that if mouth ulcer is caused by bacteria=drying up saliva by mouth breathing, so when they could change into nose breathing, they will find no mouth ulcers any more, because saliva keep washing up bacteria in asleep. The same thing can be said about bad breath, dry mouth and bleeding from gum.
