The best way to clean and dry you cpap tubing, mask . And has ant body use or seen the Hurrcane dryer?

What are some tips in cleaning your equipment and drying it. I use a mild soap hand wash and i dry all my equipment in my Hurracane dryer, ( not the unit ).

I know cleaning & drying are important.  But the dryer looks like it costs $150.  Is it really important to use this?  I cleaned my hose etc today and just hung up to dry.  Seemed to work fine.

Not ANOTHER cleaning thread!  EVERY apnea forum has a plethora of these discussions.  There seems to be no clear gold standard for cleaning.

I've been told many methods, from dishwashing detergent and hot tap water, various concentrations of soaking in vinegar and water, all the way up to a 5% bleach/water solution, by sleep specialists from RPSGT's to MD's.  Once and for all...can we not have some agreement?

There seem to be an awful lot of opinions and very few scientifically based facts. Can anyone provide some specific and compelling reasons for or against cleaning?  We need to know how often, what cleaning substances and methods to use, and why we are doing each thing.  Otherwise, all of us expressing opinions doesn't get us very far, does it?

Visual inspection is only one method of determining cleanliness and disinfection effectiveness.  If we could see pathogens, we would have a lot easier time of preventing the spread of disease.

RE:  Drying the System Hose

I usually remove my hose from the vinegar and water soak, rinse it with hot water, and immediately use it.  I figure, and my first RRT who trained me taught me, that the hose just has a little extra humidity in it, and using it avoids any questions of drying or not.

If you are bothered by the fact that your CPAP hose must be dried, why not just find an old CPAP machine and use it for drying the hose?  It solves the usage and data recording problems (although I suspect that 20 minutes of high leak will be rather obvious on a data record).  Maybe this is a good use for those machines lurking in closets of the non-compliant.

Yours for maintaining good, clean CPAP-ing,

Karen

My VPAP ResMed Auto 25 does have an auto shutoff, but wonder if it was set by the DME tech?

I use a ResMed VPAP Auto 25. Haven't seen anything about an auto off feature....I'll take another look at the settings menu.

Hi Mary,
What type of machine do you use. Most have an auto off feature that can be turned off so the machine will run without having the back pressure. That is a great question about what it will do to your numbers. I pulled up one of my customers report that does that and at the end of every nights use there is a black line that shows the machine did not record that data. I use Encore anywhere but I assume that Encore Pro would be similar.

Karen, I agree that we need some scientific data on cleaning. Each manufacturer has their own instructions, which vary widely as you noted.

Phil, I am prone to sinus infections, not bronchitis, and there has been no correlation between how frequently I clean my equipment and my sinus infections. I've tracked both to be sure.

I do clean the cushion of my full-face mask every day, otherwise my face breaks out.

I think we each need to be what works best for each of us.
