Has anyone experienced there stomach filling with air from using c pap/bi pap i woke up this morning and my stomach was rock hard and i was in terrible pain 'this has happened before' after i had burped for what felt like hours and some pepto bismol i now feel OK. Could my machine be faulty and delivering too much air ??

I stopped using the CPAP because of this and set out to find out what was going on.  It turns out, for me, that my jaw was recessed, creating a small airway and soft tissue hanging from my jaw further blocked my airway.  This is the cause of my sleep apnea, and the reason why air went into my stomach - it had nowhere else to go.

In May, I had surgery to move my jaws forward.  It's a big deal - a 6 hour surgery - but I can breathe and sleep so much better already, even as my face still recovers.  After my face "settles", sometime in December or January, I'll have a sleep study to confirm whether I am completely cured of sleep apnea or whether I still need a CPAP.  Even If I do still need a CPAP, at least it will be able to work better, because my airway is wider!

Thanks Gayle

I WILL  seek medical advice if this condition gets worse however thanks to many people giving me advice on sleep guide i have lots of things to try out first.
 Sleep well

Wayne.

I've had this severe pain periodically (not too often) over the last 6 years.  My family doctor prescribed hyoscyamine s/l (.125 mg) which I put under my tongue.  While it dissolves, I keep a heating pad on my stomach.  By the time the pill is dissolved, usually the pain is gone.  The first time it happened it frightened me, but now I just keep a few pills and a heating pad near my bedside in case I have the pain.  When I've described this to other doctors, including sleep doctors, they say it isn't possible.  I can guarantee, it does happen and it is painful.  This works for me.

Hey Wayne:

I should have mentioned that I did take my data card in after my pressure was lowered to make sure that the settings were high enough to adequately control my sleep apnea and they are.

Of course one would definitely do this only under a doctor's order and supervision.  It worked for me.  I am a persistent side sleeper with a full face mask and I rarely have any aerophagia any more.

I'd rather wake up in the morning with "aerophagia" than not wake up at all.  I suppose there are certain trade-offs for being able to stay alive or not.

Thanks Karen,

 Thats good to know.

Hi Wayne, A gastroenterologist can do an endoscopy to rule out and figure out whats causing your aerphagia. GERD, Hiatal hernea or any othes things that mess up our plumbing are clear with a quick look. Good Sleep,Chris
I had my GERD and a "floppy sphincter" diagnosed by a simple upper GI procedure (swallowing barium or something).  An endoscopy may not be necessary.
No I did not notice that. I don't know how anyone can control how their neck is positioned all night as discussed below. When asleep I sleep. I did notice that I get watery eyes alot on one side or the other. Very annoying for going to work. And I use the nostril pillows. I found I cannot use the cpap When I have air conditioning on because the tube gets cold and the air going into the machine is cold. Even with the warm heater not good enough. I don't like not using the cpap because it has helped but I do not think living on Cold capsules and anithistimine's on a daily basis is good either. I have to talk to my doctor. CPAP saved my life but is killing me lately.

Hi Mary

Since i  put new firmer pillows on the bed and started sleeping with my chin tucked into my chest i have  not had so much accumulated gas trapped in my stomach, 'may be its a fluke but it seams to be working!

I have experienced this also several times in the past.  It woke me up in the middle of the night and I had to get up for awhile and let it subside. I did not know what it was or why it was happening. Now reading others have had this too, have a better understanding. I have not had it happen probably now for over a year. I wear the nasal mask and it keeps my moth closed for the most part, so I must have had a few nights where I shifted the mask and air was getting in through my mouth.  I would never give up wearing the cpap because of it though. I'd rather sleep and feel good the next day. I do sleep on my side with two pillow between my knees and with my neck slightly down which seems to make the difference. Try whatever it takes to make it work better. Giving up cpap is not an option though. Good luck.

Wayne, I am going to try that. I have noticed the abdominal distention for some time and want to resolve it. Have trained myself to sleep on my back, but will switch pillows.
