I had my tonsils out at the same time as the Dev Sep surgery mainly because I had a long history of tonsil infections. The surgery on the tongue and hard palette were new and I opted not to do it. In my case OSA has slowly gotten worse as I aged. I…

I had surgery for Deviated Septum in 1992 when I was first diagnosed with OSA. I can echo most of the prior response. It does'nt hurt much and recovery is fast. I could breathe out of both sides of my nose for the first time and the number of sinus…

I still have my first machine and the motor is big enough to run a vacuum cleaner. I measure the amperage draw and DC battery life then put a second battery in my car just to run it. The new machines use very little power.

A 10 foot hose is good for those times you must put your machine on the floor. Careful not to block any vents in the machine, sit it on a magazine. You roll over in bed and break the swivel valve on your mask you can't buy those parts at the corner…

Thanks Rock great post. I have a very narrow nose bridge and it is difficult to fit but I always start as you describe.

Could I suggest that a quiz on Facebook be formulated with a hook to draw people in and test for Apnea risk? I am not clever enough to do it but there are others here who are. The posted quiz are catnip to everyone I see there and might reach more p…

The chief of Cardiology at the local hospital here has begun sending all of his heart patients for a sleep study as part of the treatment plan. Severe or untreated Sleep Apnea always results in Congestive Heart Failure. If you have Apnea demand a wo…

Welcome to the CPAP community Lori. No question is stupid no matter how insignificant it seems. This is hard and any help is good help.

I have a somewhat humorous aside to this, being a nurse my wife is hyper aware of when my CPAP leaks or my breathing changes. Her eyesight is so bad that if she forgets where she puts her glasses she can't see to find them. Several times I have wake…

People have lived for eons without CPAP so you have to accept that it doesn't function everywhere although in my experience it seems you become dependent on it over time. When I have been denied use for one reason or another I use a neck roll that a…

Buy one of the Black and Decker Jump Starter devices sold to start cars with a dead battery. There are several models in Safety Orange as low as $35 at Walmart. Even the cheapest have DC power outlets and some have built in AC inverters. But I agree…

That's a good idea Mike. You would think with the noise and discomfort you would wake right away when the power goes off but I never have. My wife wakes me up when she hears me choking. I have mentioned a number of times that she is an RN and accord…

Every CPAP I have seen has a DC power option on the back. Mine requires a specific type of wiring harness sold by the manufacturer with some type of resister/filter. They are unforgiving if you hook them up wrong. My father inlaw burned his up rever…

David replied to Chris's discussion 'Uppers'
I have taken Provigil, Ionamine and Amphetamine all caused problems unrelated to APNEA. Some people tolerate Provigil well but Amphetamine is inevitably addictive and Ionamine has been linked to heart valve problems.

My Interest in Sleep Apnea
I have Sleep Apnea
Treatment Being Used, if any
CPAP
If Machine Being Used, What Type? (e.g., Respironics M Series with A-Flex Auto-Adjusting CPAP)
REMstar Auto but it is used as an ordinary CPAP. I cracked the adjustment codes and tried CFLEX, Auto etc and the ordinary CPAP setting use worked best. I use 15 cm
If Mask Being Used, What Type? (e.g., ResMed Activa Nasal Mask)
I have tried numerous masks and none of them pull tight enough on the bottom that they will seal particularly if you have facial hair. I use a modified ResMed Ultra Mirage II Full Face Mask. First I removed the upper pillow frame. I would rather have one small red welt on the bridge of my nose than two large ones on my forehead. Then I purchased a 4 point head gear from a ResMed nasal only mask and turned it upside down that gives me a strap that goes around my neck eliminating the problem with sealing at the chin. That head gear is discontinued so I have to find old stock on the internet.

In delayed sleep phase syndrome, the internal biological clock runs longer than the normal 24-hour cycle, resulting in a desire to go to sleep later and wake up later. The plan of action? Resetting Merbaum's clock through the use of light therapy: d…

Honestly I believe that the medical industry should be controlled by parties from both the government and private sectors. Until someone comes up with a better solution I will continue to support licensure.

Carol right now those odds are slim. Those jobs just are not open to the RPSGT at this point. Not that I have found anyway. Most sleep programs are only available to RTs right now. We are fighting to put an end to this. The sleep programs should be…

All I have left to say is that giving complete control to the private sector has worked well for our economy so far. Good luck in GA banyon. I hope that we are still friends. I will continue to follow and be educated by your post. Rock

I don't follow the logic that creating government licensing would take some of the control back from government. But there will be no energy spent by me to stop the effort in NY. Eventually it may come around to GA, as our historically independent…

It is my opinion that every lab should employ an RT. Just due to the nature of what we do. If that RT happens to be double certified for sleep then that is a bonus in my opinion. On the same note DMEs should have to employ a RPSGT as well as a RRT.…
