My respect for you is unwaivering jnk.

I agree that it needs to be fair across the board. Everyone who is at risk for putting anyone else at risk should be tested in a fair manner. If pilots who are at far less risk for an accident should be tested then so should everyday drivers. My emphasis was that you need to use the right tool for the job. If I were to build a deck made of wood I would probably not use my plyers to beat the nails in. Microsleep is sleep. In order to measure it I would want to use the proper tools.

On a side note I read yesterday that most people are more scared of spiders than cars.
It was and continues to be an extremely difficult decision to stand by. Having to rely on others for transportation is very cumbersome in many respects. We have a program started by the independent living center here where seniors and disabled can purchase whatever amount of taxi coupons or tokens they wish at a reduced rate - something like 30-50 cents on the dollar. Each coupon is worth $3 and you use them to pay for the taxi ride to wherever. It is paid for through clients purchasing the tokens and a grant the Independent living Center entered into with one of the local cab companies. The service compliments Care-A-Van, which is also a service available to qualified seniors and disabled. You call ahead to schedule your ride and they take you door to door wherever you need to go, then send out a statement at the end of each month that says here is the value and record of this month's rides. Please make a donation if you can. Community of @ 30,000. Catholic Community Services operates Care-A-Van here and in other SE Alaska communities. It's a good program, also known as "paratransit" in some areas.

There are two additional issues that I think of when we talk of microsleep. One is days like today when I am certain that I am awake, but I am not truly. When I rejoin the world, I realize an hour has gone by!! Days when I simply cannot stay awake no matter what - making me wonder if I have some kind of sleep disorder yet to be named! :) Or, if this fits the micro sleep others were talking about. With me, it is hard to even stay awake many days and I have questioned chronic fatigue or some other O2 related issue b/c I always perk up with Oxygen!

The other issue that comes to mind, esp when they talk about micro sleep being a body demand or search and find for sleep is our drive to do or accomplish so much in this life time. We push so hard - when I nearly died, the doctor that saved my life consistently told me that it was all the times I had pushed so hard in the past that had taken a toll on my body and had gotten me to where I was. So if that it true, then we should be teaching our children to pace themselves and not to give in to overly demanding bosses and situations. Our culture is simply not designed that way. We reward the people who are willing to work more and more hours. Or are willing to go that extra mile. However, when this same person becomes sick or disabled, it is their fault for not having taken better care of themselves!! I don't know. I just find all the double standards very frustrating.
A nap brought on by drinking too many microbrews?

If people are on average 40 hours sleep deprived, then why don't they continue to sleep beyond the normal 8 hours or so. Wouldn't they be able to wake up for food and bathroom trips, then go right back to sleep again until they are caught up.
