I've logged in over 500 hours on my new bipap with the leak rate at zero most nights and AHI below 2. Before therapy the AHI was 96 an hour.  There has been improvement since starting therapy approx 3 years ago but I'm still having problems. Mostly memory and mood but I never was really that "sleepy" before therapy.

On most nights I have the sensation that I'm not really sleeping, like I'm aware that I'm lying there with the mask on.  I do dream, some nights I remember many dreams but they always have some element of anxiety to them.  I saw a Nova program about dreams and they found that some people do not go into all the stages of rem.  They don't get the restorative kind of rem. The Zeo would help me know if I'm right about waking up so much.  It's a big price tag to put out for something I don't know would help.  I'd spend the money if I knew it could help the docs figure out what is going on.  They want me to be evaluated for depression, and that's okay but, I just don't think that's it. My life's good right now but I have no energy. The glass is always half full.

I did something that was shocking to me that tops some of the other forgetful things I have done. I was getting the house ready for a birthday slumber party for the 17yr old but I also needed to get the little one to another party for a friend. I stopped getting ready for the one at home and took the little one 1/2 hour away to this other party, well, there was no party.  It was the following weekend. That's not so strange right? The strange thing is as soon as I got there I remembered that it was next weekend and I remembered thinking "Good it's not on the same weekend.", and it was written on the calendar on the right day.  What the heck!!

I originally wrote this as a response to the link about the Zeo but thought it would be better put out as a post on it's own.

I forgot to say that the 500 hours is just on the new machine. I faithfully wore the other one every time I slept but, I don't know how many hours that would be.
bonesigh, I know that feeling of being sure I'm not sleeping, but know I must have because I remember long dreams, also with that element of anxiety. It wouldn't hurt to be evaluated by a psychitrist for depression. If that turns out not to be a problem, good. As for the memory thing- it happens to me, too. Hopefully it will improve. But, as I said a meeting with a psychiatrist being sure to detail all your symptoms wouldn't hurt. You could also talk to your sleep doc.

Good luck,
Mary Z.
My verdict is still out on the Zeo. I am working to try and do some more research on it. I do agree with Mary though. It may be time to bring a psychiatrist or neurologist in on your treatment. depression or even some degree of anxiety could be the problem.

I am no doc or have I ever seen your sleep but it sounds to me like you may have some Paradoxical Insomnia working with some anxiety. It was originally termed Sleep State Misperception which consitss of a persons complaint of Insomnia without any evidience of the disorder. Many times in a lab setting pts will complain that they have not slept at all when the data shows that they have. As Sleepy Carol will attest to sometimes with anxiety 5 minutes alone in a dark room can feel like hours. This anxiety topped with the constant arousals brought on by apnea or some other sleep disorder can be a nightmare for a person with this type of anxiety disorder. giving someone a PAP unit will treat the apnea and the symptoms, but some people need to be retaught how to sleep in conjunction with the PAP. Such as my anxiety ridden 9 year old.

I do believe that a Sleep certified pulmonologist is the best doc for treating apnea and the problems that may come with it. However their are only a small amount of sleep disorders that have to do with breathing or the heart while there are almost 70 that deal with the neurology of sleep. Long before pulmonologist, or cardiologist were even concerned with sleep psychiatrist and neurologist were gathering information on it. Despite most of Freud's work being proven wrong he paved the way for sleep research as we know it.
Okay guys, thanks for the response. I really appreciate it. I'll get my head checked out and hopefully they will want to send me to neurology for test. I don't think I have depression. I don't know much about anxiety disorders. I don't feel anxious and as I said my life is very good right now but I'm really just plugging along in a blah state. I thought insomnia was when you could not fall asleep. I fall asleep very fast but then it seems as if I'm not sleeping (hard to explain). I never want to get up in the morning.

Sorry about your girl having problems but she's got at least one thing going for her, she has a fantastic daddy!
Have you researched "hypnogogic hallucination". Just another option. Sometimes they can be very realistic. Opposite end of rockhinkle's idea. Maybe worth a looksy though. If anything now you have some questions for your existing doc. Does your PCP know about this sensation that you are having? If not they should.
Never heard of those, I'll check 'em out. The Sleep doc said to see the PCP and the PCP said to get checked for depression. My sleep doc does not think it is depression (she was trained as a psychiatrist) but wants to rule that out. Could be PLM though the movements were not extremely high. Thanks 73.
