I also wear the Swift FX nasal mask and I am a Respiratory Therapist, I have worn it for 2 years at first I heard the air but after 3 months I must of gotten use to it.  I love it and I would not change.  Keep trying it I think it is a very good mask and so soft to my face.

If it isn't in the mask it could be in the connection between the humidifier & the machine.. Even though it looks connected push it in further. P.

It's two years since i started using the nasal pillow mask (Fisher&Paykel Opus). I am quite confortable with it, the problem with the hissing sounds reveals either it is not well positioned / the size is not the correct one for you or that the mask is getting deteriorated and you need to replace the mask (not your case as you are trying a new one). Usually with some adjustments to make the mask better fit to the nasal pillows succeed in making the hissing sound disappear. Hope this helpful. Cheers Stefano.

I'm experiencing some success with the above Respironics 'Comfort Gel' nasal mask.  Of course, I'm still recovering my my deviated nasal septum surgery.

You could be hearing the air out the top of the elbow.  Try plugging it to see if the sound goes away.

I used the Resmed FX pillows for about 2 month and it was OK.  After trying several

I settled on the Resmed Mirage Swift II.  The FX pillows nose piece has a double wall

construction which seems to collapse.  The FX seemed to leak a lot and was hard to

adjust.  The Mirage Swift has a single wall construction, and works much better for me.

For me the Mirage Swift was 100% better than the FX.  It doesn't leak, is stable, and very

comfortable.  Of course everyone seems to have their own preferences for masks.

Good luck with your selection.

Hi Ernestine,

Welcome to SleepGuide, and to the thrills of CPAP!

I've been using mine for close to two years and, despite the challenges and sometimes frustrations, I actually enjoy using my CPAP.

I'm rested, I feel much better and, considering the health problems I'd have without it, it is a relatively minor thing to deal with.

I've used four types of masks, so maybe I can help with your question.

The "hissing", you're hearing could be from a few places. It's possible to have loose hose or fittings, so I'd first check to make sure everything's connected properly.

Otherwise, you're probably hearing "leaks" from where the pillows contact your nose. If that's the case, you'll need to adjust or move the pillow assembly to make a better fit.

The pillows that I use come in different sizes, included with the mask, so if yours does, it might be worth trying a different size.

Sometimes you need to balance a few things: positioning the mask, adjusting the straps, and routing the hose.

Also, once you find the "right" adjustments and positions, they may change over time. Mine has been pretty well adjusted for months, but recently it seems to be leaking more than usual.

Please don't be discouraged, particularly after only a few nights. This all takes some time to get used to!

30 days is usually enough for you to see if you like a particular mask. Don't be shy about changing them, since it might take you two or three tries to find the one you like.

In my case, the company I get the equipment from let me keep the ones I didn't like, so in the beginning, I tended not to like them until I tried them all (wink, wink!)

So, good luck, and let us know how you're doing!

Ernestine,

You know air comes out of the top; it's a (as my brain is froze) relief valve or exhaust and this air is normal.   You can put your hand there to feel the air coming out and hear it.  Mine annoys me when I roll on my side and it hits the pillow.

I would put on the nasal mask and move it and the hose different ways to see if it goes away......as well place your hand over the valve and see if you hear somewhat of the same sound.

I have the swift FX as well, and from time to time I hear the hissing noise of which you are speaking. I find for me it comes from the nasal pillows not fitting quite right. As soon as I move them around and adjust it, the noise stops. Good luck!
I got my swift FX about six weeks ago and I have loved it from the first night.  I had been told that I could not use nasal pillows because my pressure is too high.  But until I got my Swift FX I had tried three or four full face masks and all they did was leak and they were miserable. My husband would wake me up and tell me it was making a lot of noise or it would wake me over and over. The only sound I ever hear from the FX is if I get on my side sometimes and the air from the relief opening hits the sheets. This mask is great!!! My brother had told it was the best and when I was told my pressure was too high I was dissappointed. Then a new RT came on with my DME and she never said anything about the pressure being too high she just gave me one to try.  There is no way I would go back to a full face mask. I love it. Just try adjusting it or using another size pillows but don't give up, it is much better than a full face mask. I can hardly tell I am wearing it but I am now feeling better. I was getting no results from the other masks. I was still feeling lousy. What a difference!!!
I have been using the nasal pillow mask, Swift 2, for a couple of years and I love it. For reasons that I cannot explain, there are times when the medium size doesnt work, so I switch to the small size and it does well for a while, then it starts to leak. So I play this game over time, switching between sizes. I have learned that the right position is everything.

I have also placed one of those 3M removable wall hooks on the head of the bed with a shoe lace to "suspend" the hose and this has also helped to keep the weight of the hose off the mask. the pillows are a bit more sensitive to weight compared the facial masks.

Also, keep it clean. I use an "organic" dishwashing liquid to help cut the facial oils that collect on the silicone. it helps with keeping the seal better as well..

Good luck and welcome to the "pap" world
thanks to all of you for the suggestions , it has been close to a week with the nasal pillow mask and do not seem to be doing that well with it, my nose is irritated , and my mouth comes open and talking about having a dry mouth , not good ! i have figured out after looking at the suggestions from you all about the hissing sound and it is the way the nasal pillows are situated after adjusting them it stops but monday i think i will take it back and go back to the full mask, at least i can get some sleep with that on. i did use the chin strap but the seam on the chin strap hurts my ear . i did think the size of the nasal pillow could possibly be too big which is a small size but i think you have to order the extra small . just do not think this nasal pillow mask is not for me.
