I've heard that studies are being conducted of people who still subjectively report feeling sleepy even after having successfully used CPAP. Wondering if this has happened to anyone, or how common it is?

I've being using CPAP for 9 weeks and am still tired in the morning. It is not the reaction I expected.
Nancy
in those 9 weeks, how many times have your checked your data to measure what your leak rate is, where your AHI is at, what percentage of the time you are at a certain pressure, etc.? if you haven't done this yet, you really must to get a sense of whether the CPAP is even set properly by your doctor.

Where can I find this information? I can see how many hours I am using the machine but not much else. Are you downloading the information to your computer? How did you get the "Respironics date report" you posted earlier? I am concerned because my O2 Sat. was pretty low.
Nancy, i see you have a respironics machine. if you have any one of the FULLY DATA CAPABLE machines listed below, you can buy the software and card reader package for $199 at ApneaLife.com, and start downloading the data your machine collects to your computer, and start to trouble shoot and know what's going on:

Respironics M Series Pro w/C-Flex
Respironics M Series Auto w/C-Flex
Respironics M Series Auto w/A-Flex
Respironics Bi-PAP Auto w/Bi-Flex
Respironics M Series Bi-PAP Auto w/Bi-Flex

I have had several patients who have had this issue. There are a couple of new studies out on the issue as well. Sometimes there are other issues that are hiding behind sleep apnea like medication interaction or idopathic hypersomnia or restless legs. If your machine is working well and your mask is fitting you properly then I would call your sleep specialist and talk to him or her. They know yoru history and they will know where to look next.
It is normal to be groggy in the morning, as long as it goes away.
This is happening with me.

I've been using my BPAP for 11 months now, still waking up too frequently, still very sleepy during waking hours. Yes I read my data, my AHI's and all vary but the sleepiness remains no matter what.
BP, do you have your full sleep study? wonder whether you can look at it and figure out whether they overlooked restless leg syndrome or something else that's causing your sleep to be fragmented other than OSA. if you can attach your full sleep study here (feel free to redact out name), we have some pretty clever folks who might have some feedback on it that you can in turn use when you consult with your sleep doctor next.

Yes, this is my last titration results

13 awakenings

Sleep latency to N1-3.5 minutes (used ambien)
Sleep latency to N2-19.0 minutes
Sleep latency to N3 (SWS)-39.0 minutes
Stage R Latency from Sleep Onset: 80.5 minutes

Minutes N1-51.5
N2-223.0
N3-4.0 (almost no N3 sleep-even though I had mask on)

% of test N1-15.5% % of Sleep Period-11.5%
% of test N2-67.3% % of sleep period-50.0%
% of test N3-1.2% % of sleep period-0.9%
% of test R(Rem)-16.0% % of sleep period-11.9%

Summary Graph: (OF GREAT INTEREST TO ME)

The Central showed two lines at the beginning of my sleep period and no other centrals throughout the night. I've been having trouble falling asleep since last March, I haven't been breathing at sleep onset and have been waking up. Only Ambien has gotten me to fall asleep.

The two lines were under 30 seconds, first line of graph showed a central of around 15 seconds, second line of perhaps 20-25 seconds............I was first told that I had sleep apnea in July 07 (wasn't aware of any trouble before then) by a woman I slept with as she noted that I had been gasping, choking, not breathing at sleep onset. She was medically trained, she said i had the signs of sleep apnea.....

Obstructive showed up right at same time as centrals, there were three lines close to same period as centrals, each under 30 seconds but between 15 and 25 seconds, followed quickly by four more lines, two of which lasted just over 30 seconds and then three more lines, each under 30 seconds...............................There was only one large cluster of obstructive events, these were about two hours later (between 1 to 2 AM) followed by one solitary line between 4 and 5 AM and a three line cluster between 5 and 6 AM.........

Two Hypopneas around 11:30 PM, both of which were inbetween the Obstructive cluster of that time, then a large cluster of Hypopneas between 1 and 2 AM, these began during the latter part of the Obstructive events of that time and these Hypopneas kept going after the Obstructives ended. Then another cluster of Hypopneas between 4 and 5 AM (the single Obstructive event was in between the occurance of the Hypopneas, it started as a cluster of Hypopneas, the Hypopneas ended then I had the one Obstructive event followed by one Hypopnea event and then the chart shows two single Hyponeas between 5 and 6 AM, first Hypopnea taking place just before the single obstructive event.

Pressure originally was at 6, it went up to 8, went over 10 (to around 11) during 1-2 AM events, stayed around 13 till around 3:30 AM (was woken around that time, in fact I did stay awake at one period around then for over an hour, used ambien to get back to sleep). Pressure dipped at 3:30 AM to around 6 went back up to 12 , showed dips between back to 6 and back up to chart to 12 or 14? during period between 4:30 and 5:30 but I had been awake between 4:30 to after 5 AM.........Chart shows I went back to N2 after 5AM and that pressure stayed steady around 12 or 14 during this period (I was being titrated while on my back at that time).

No Mixed events, no Autonomic events.........Sp02% (oxygen?) was mostly just under 100 but with a few dips to under 90% until the 1-2 AM period where there was a large cluster of lines dropping to low 90's or right at 90% and a good sized number of lines falling under the 90% level. After that, lines stayed in the mid 90's but with several dips under 90 during the latter Hypopnea events between 4 and 5 AM.

2 things that jump out to me right away are that you have 21 LM Arousals -- Limb Movement arousals. perhaps this is RLS?

also, your problems are greatly exacerbated by sleeping on your back. irrespective of what treatment you're using, you might also consider a device to help you side sleep.

hopefully one of the experts / sleep techs will chime in too on this report.

one nice way to get a pretty pdf to upload is to download the "Cute pdf" writer -- free software, and then print to your "cute pdf" printer. that will save the data report off the machine to pdf form. to get the cute pdf software, go to cutepdf.com
